Spiritus Creator: The Cosmic Dimension of Calvin’s Doctrine of the Holy Spirit

Many monographs, dissertations and articles convey the richness of Calvin’s doctrine of the Holy Spirit. It is even no exaggeration to call pneumatology the theological “heart” of his thinking. The Holy Spirit is active in many different aspects of theology: in translating and transmitting the Word of God, in the process of justification and sanctification, in relation to and with the Father and the Son and so on. In this presentation, the focus will be on the cosmic dimension of Calvin’s pneumatology. How can the Spirit be Creator (Institutes I.2,1) and why is he necessary to sustain the world (Commentaries on the first book of Moses)? Might the cosmic dimension of Calvin’s pneumatology be also the most currently relevant (climate debate)?
