Abstract:

In 1637 the mathematician Pierre de Fermat wrote the statement of a theorem in a margin of one of his books, and added "I have discovered a truly marvelous proof which this margin is too small to contain."  For over 300 years, people tried and failed to prove this theorem, which became known as Fermat's Last Theorem.  In this week's Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium we will see a documentary about how Andrew Wiles proved this theorem, and in so doing opened new avenues of research in mathematics.
