The November 17 Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium will feature Calvin's Chemistry professor Douglas Vander Griend: "Mathematics and Chemistry: Soulmates Together at Last."

You are cordially invited to join us on Thursday, November 17 in NH 276 at 3:00 pm for light refreshments, and then to hear a fascinating lecture at 3:10 pm.  Professor Doug Vander Griend will share a talk entitled "Mathematics and Chemistry, Soulmates Together at Last."

Like Ross and Rachel of Friends, everyone can see that chemistry and mathematics are soulmates. But it took the subject of group theory to finally end their tempestuous courtship  and pull them down the aisle. The rigorous characterization of symmetry elements as algebraic groups is foundational for molecular geometry, motion, and bonding. Whichever side of the aisle you may sit on, come witness the beauty of chemistry and mathematics working seamlessly together.
