6 Ways Water Has Changed Calvin University

This presentation will give a historical perspective on the activities of the Calvin Environmental Assessment program, which began more than 20 years ago as a faculty-led service learning project. It will use, as an example, results from a project that has studied the surface water quality on our campus since the beginning of CEAP and describe significant impacts related to water and our place in the watershed. The talk will also provide some inspiration for the future.

Mark Muyskens has a bachelor's degree from Central College and a PhD degree in physical chemistry from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He began his college teaching career at Calvin in 1989 with a specialization in physical chemistry and an interest in environmental chemistry. His research interests focus on experimental and computational methods to study light-induced reactions, and most recently on fluorescence from naturally-produced coumarins. In the past year, he was awarded a sabbatical leave to spend the Spring Semester in Lausanne, Switzerland, where he studied coumarin ions in the gas-phase. He has been an active participant in the Calvin Environmental Assessment program since its beginning in 1997.

Keynote lecture will be from 3:30 pm-4:30 pm in the Science Building Room 010 with the Student Poster Session and refreshments following the lecture in the Science Building Atrium from 4:30 pm-5:30 pm.
