A trio of Calvin professors are considered some of the state's top teachers. Statestats.org has named professor of education Clarence Joldersma, professor of psychology Marjorie Gunnoe and professor of nursing Adejoke Ayoola to their top 25 professor listings in each of their respective fields. Calvin joins the University of Michigan and Michigan State University as the only schools which have faculty included in each of the three academic discipline categories.
Founded in 2012, Statestats' mission is to advance education through the use of technology and informational tools, with a primary focus on building free web tools that make education and information more accessible to students and the general public.
One of Statestats' initiatives is creating top 25 professor listings. The website's editorial and executive committees' goal is to highlight post-secondary educators who have excelled in the classroom, on campus and in the community in 2012. The committee looked specifically for recent awards, publications and recognitions that signaled such excellence.
Included on the site are short biographies for each of the honored professors. For those professors from Calvin:
"Dr. Ayoola has been awarded a $350,000 grant to study possible methods to reduce unplanned pregnancy in low-income communities. After completing her undergraduate and master's degrees in Nigeria, she earned her Ph.D. from Michigan State University in 2007."
"Clarence Joldersma won the Collaborative Change Award with three peers for their leadership in promoting a culture of sustainability at Calvin College in 2012. His research interests include education ethics and spirituality."
"Marjorie Gunnoe teaches courses in child and adolescent development and youth faith formation. Before coming to Calvin College, she worked at Child Trends, Inc. in Washington D.C."
