The 31-member Calvin College board of trustees concluded its winter meeting this weekend on the school's campus in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The winter meeting is one of three annual sessions for the Calvin board, which also meets in October and May.
Faculty interviews are always a highlight at the February board meeting. This year's meeting was no exception.
The Calvin board interviewed and granted tenure to: Albert Boerema (education), Crystal Bruxvoort (chemistry), Robert Eames (business), Lew Klatt (English), Robert Schoone-Jongen (history), Anding Shen (biology), Timothy Steele (music) and Joel Westra (political science).
Besides the tenure interviews, the Calvin board also approved for reappointment an additional 26 faculty members.
The board also attended a special dinner where Calvin's 20th-annual Presidential Award for Exemplary Teaching was given to professor of chemistry Larry Louters.
Another important item for the board of trustees was approval of the new 2012-2013 rates for tuition, fees and room and board. The overall budget will be set when the board of trustees meets in May.
Tuition and fees for 2012-2013 will be $26,480, while room and board will be $9,110. With additional fees of $225, the total costs for 2012-2013 will be $35,815. This represents an overall tuition increase of 4.5 percent.
Calvin vice president for enrollment management Russ Bloem notes that educational costs continue to rise throughout the nation, but that Calvin remains committed to offering an exceptional and accessible education to all students. Bloem says one way the college is doing this is through increasing its financial aid offerings by more than $5 million from 2011-2012 to 2012-2013. That represents an 18-percent increase.
"In response to the current economic environment, the college has significantly increased funding to all key aid programs including academic scholarships, need-based grants and donor-funded scholarships," said Bloem. "It is our desire that through these enhancements to our financial aid programming, we will continue to make Calvin accessible to all students who desire to attend."
More than 90 percent of the Calvin student body will receive some form of financial aid, making the actual cost to attend Calvin, in most cases, well below the listed cost.
