Calvin College's geology, geography and environmental studies department, in collaboration with the biology department, international development studies program and the Calvin Faith and Science Seminar series is sponsoring the Global Hunger and Food Security Seminar Series.

The 12-part series, which kicked off on Tuesday, October 4, will address such topics as sustainable agriculture, conservation farming and restoring soil fertility, among other things.

"Calvin students have shown both an interest and concern for missions, international development and other global issues," said geology professor Ralph Stearley who helped setup the series. "After [biology professor] Uko Zylstra gave two talks on this same subject in our department last autumn, a number of us realized that a series like this was long overdue."

The seminar series will continue throughout the 2011-2012 academic year. The list of speakers includes: Calvin biology professors Uko Zylstra, David Dornbos and Dave Koetje; Calvin environmental science professor James Skillen; Calvin geology professor Ralph Stearley; Purdue biology professor Mitch Tuinstra; GVSU biology professor Sheila Blackman; Indiana Wesleyan biology professor Grace Miller; Michigan State Ph.D. candidate Jenny Cairns; Tom Post, the Asia team leader from Christian Reformed World Relief Committee, and Martin Price, founder and former director of Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization (ECHO).

Long-time Calvin biology professor Uko Zylstra kicked off the series on Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Zylstra provided an overview of the issues that will be addressed in the series and looked ahead to the discussions in the coming weeks and months.

The series is free and open to the public. For more info, including a complete schedule of speakers, contact Jason VanHorn at 616-526-7623 or at jev35@calvin.edu
