Calvin ranks second nationally in Open Doors Report

Summary: The 2010 Open Doors report ranks Calvin second nationally among baccalaureate institutions for the total number of students who participate in a short-term duration study abroad. The school ranks sixth in that same category for number of international students studying on campus.

According to the 2010 report, which recounts data from the previous school year, Calvin ranks second in its category with 421 students studying abroad in semester programs, interims and other programs.

The college currently hosts semester programs in Britain, China, France, Ghana, Honduras, Hungary, The Netherlands and Spain. In the fall of 2011, a new program in Peru will be added that focuses on Spanish.

In addition, Calvin offers many off-campus interim courses based in other countries, which multiplies the opportunities for students to study abroad. Calvin currently offers interims on six different continents and in more than 30 different countries.

"Calvin has made a strong commitment to global engagement," said Don DeGraaf, director of Calvin's off-campus programs. "Students have the opportunity to travel to the far reaches of the globe, but more importantly than just travel, is the intentional effort taken to assure that students travel with a purpose, to see how God is at work in our world and to ask how God is calling them to join His work in His world."

The Open Doors report notes a record number of international students studying in the U.S., a trend, which holds true at Calvin, which in 2008-2009 had 350 international students studying on campus, ranking the school sixth in the nation among baccalaureate institutions.
