Calvin College will host its first-ever edible book festival beginning at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 1, 2010, in the Campus Store.
The first-ever "Books in the Baking Edible Book Festival" is sponsored by Calvin's Hekman Library. Lois Dye, the curriculum coordinator for the library, has attended several of the American Library Association's edible book festivals and says that the idea of an edible book is open to interpretation.
The brochure for the event confirmed that: "It can be a pun on a title, refer to a scene or a character, look like a book, or just have something to do with books."
But, there are rules. Each entry must be made of food items and accompanied by a list of ingredients, and proper food handling guidelines must be followed in preparing the books.
From 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. festival-goers will be able to browse the edible books and cast their ballot for the People's Choice award. Then attendees may eat the books. The prizes for Books in the Baking are cookbooks.
