Summary: More than a hundred bicyclists are expected to leave Calvin College and head downtown on Friday, October 9 at 2 p.m. to lobby for more bicycle transportation in urban areas.

On Friday, October 9 at 2 p.m. students, faculty, staff and community members will leave Calvin College and bicycle to Rosa Parks Circle downtown.

The ride is part of the "Go Green, Go Dutch, Go Bike" event, which is also held in a number of other North American cities. The event is not just for students, staff and faculty of Dutch ancestry. It is also for anyone who supports the idea of having more bicycle transportation in urban areas and appreciates the role bicycles have played in Dutch society.

The event will begin at 1 p.m. in Calvin's Commons Lecture Hall with a talk about bicycle use in the Netherlands. Following the talk, Grand Rapid mayor George Heartwell will lead the bicyclists out of Calvin and towards downtown. The group will be joined by other Grand Rapids organizations that advocate for bicycle use.

The event is also a fundraiser for the local chapter of the Motion Initiative: An Urban Cooperative Youth Bicycling Ministry, which makes bicycles available for children from poor families.
