Summary: For the first time in its 58-year history, Calvin College's annual Homecoming celebration will be moved from winter to fall. The college has a host of events planned October 9-10 to celebrate this tradition.

Calvin College's annual Homecoming will look much more colorful than in years past. The 58th annual Homecoming celebration will take place in the fall, October 9-10. It is the first time this tradition has not been celebrated during the winter season.

"After 57 years of scheduling Homecoming around basketball in the winter chill of Michigan, it seemed time to move this traditional alumni event to a time on the calendar that was milder and more colorful. Having Homecoming in the fall allows us to schedule activities and programs outside, amid Michigan's fall colors," said Mike Van Denend, director of alumni, parent and community relations at Calvin.

The college's alumni office has put together a host of events for the weekend.

One of the most colorful events, the Cardboard Canoe Race and Block Party, kicks off the weekend festivities at 5 p.m. on Friday, October 9. In its 14th year, the contest challenges students to construct a canoe using only cardboard, trash bags and duct tape and then to race their creation across the Seminary Pond.

In addition, Calvin will host a handful of athletic events, including: men's and women's cross country, soccer, hockey, a women's volleyball match and a number of alumni sporting events. The college will also have both indoor and outdoor activities for kids, offer on campus trolley rides and host receptions for a number of class reunions.
