Summary: Calvin College has received grants totaling nearly $1.4 million as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
Calvin has received grants totaling nearly $1.4 million from American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (passed in February 2009 by both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate to create jobs and spur increased economic activity).
Chemistry professors Eric Arnoys, David Benson and Chad Tatko, and biology professor Amy Wilstermann received $487,470 to purchase a 500 MHz spectrometer for faculty and student research.
Benson, Tatko and Wilstermann along with biology professors John Wertz and Randall DeJong also received $279,000 to purchase an instrument that can measure the mass of large biomolecules, like proteins or DNA. The instrument can also determine the identity of bacteria in complex samples, such as soil or pond water.
Chemistry professor Larry Louters received $223,050 for his diabetes research on "The Mechanism for the Acute Activation of GLUT1."
Chemistry professor Carolyn Anderson received $170,000 for her work on synthetic peptides and Alzheimer's and produce materials of interest for crystal engineering and biological applications.
Chemistry professor Doug Vander Griend received $126,000 to support research he is doing on supramolecular structures, nanomachines and thermochromic materials.
Finally, chemistry professor Kumar Sinniah received $55,077 for a project on biophysical analysis of enzyme inhibitor interactions. UPDATING A PREVIOUS PRESS RELEASE: Sinniah's grant was funded by the NIH, not the NSF as previously stated.
