Summary: Calvin College has prepared a full lineup of events to celebrate John Calvin's 500th birthday year, including a birthday party on Friday, July 10.
On Friday, July 10 the Calvin College community will celebrate John Calvin's 500th birthday. Calvin has celebrated the birthday of the renowned Reformer every year since 1982.
The birthday party will take place at 10 a.m. in the recently completed Hoogenboom Health and Recreation Center in the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex. The celebration will include the traditional serving of birthday cake and punch and the singing of 'Happy Birthday.' It will also feature a short John Calvin birthday video.
Karin Maag, director of the Meeter Center for Calvin Studies and expert on John Calvin, said Calvin's influence on the college is still evident today.
"One way to see that influence is in the strong emphasis on vocation/calling in the lives of students, staff and faculty. What people do at the college and [for students] after graduation is more than simply a job: instead, they operate with a sense of calling," said Maag.
Following the morning celebration, guests are invited to stop by the Meeter Center (4th floor of Hekman Library) to see Calvin displays and items from the rare books collection.
The college has prepared a full lineup of events for John Calvin's 500th birthday year, including panel discussions, lectures, an artist series and a Genevan hymn sing.
