Calvin professor of communication arts and sciences Daniel Garcia will hand over to the Grand Rapids Public Library (GRPL) 50 hours of original interviews with local philanthropists.

The event titled A Gift To All begins at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, June 9 at the Ladies Literary Club. The event will begin with brief remarks and a formal signing over of the materials.

Garcia interviewed more than 30 local philanthropists over the course of the past two years as a part of a project that aimed to honor past givers and inspire future ones. Now, those interviews will become a permanent part of the GRPL historical collection.

Tim Gleisner, the Grand Rapids history and special collections supervisor for the GRPL, says the collection will serve a variety of uses.

"Any researcher, any student, any casual user that wants to learn more about the city - about the noted figures who are in this documentary - people like that are going to look at this collection," Gleisner said.

The original interviews are just one component of the overall project, which also includes a one-hour documentary, which premiered in November of 2008 and a standardized curriculum being designed for K-12 students in schools throughout the United States.

"As far as we know, this project is one of a kind in this country, where a group of people made a history of philanthropists and philanthropy," said Pam Daugavietis, executive producer of the project.

The June 9 event will feature a reception and a screening of the one-hour documentary, "The Gift of All: A Community of Givers."
