Two Calvin biology majors, sophomore Susan Boersma of Grand Rapids and junior Andrew Wiersma of Ypsilanti, have received grants to conduct student research this summer at Pierce Cedar Creek Institute, located south of Hastings. The Undergraduate Research Grants for the Environment (URGE) program, now in its fifth year, awards the grants.
URGE grants, which were awarded to 17 students for 2009, provide a $3,500 stipend for students along with a $3,500 faculty mentor stipend. Each award also allows for up to $4,000 in room and board expenses for the student and faculty mentor.
Boersma and Wiersma will work with Calvin faculty mentor David Doornbos to measure carbon dioxide absorbed by the greenspace of the institute.
Contact David Doornbos at 616-916-1633.
