The fourth biennial Festival of Faith and Music will take place at Calvin
College in Grand Rapids, Michigan, April 2-4, 2009. Dedicated to exploring the
conversation between faith and the art of music, the festival seeks to create
community among musicians, critics, theologians and listeners from a variety of
backgrounds. The 2009 festival is taking this community to a new place by
inviting nationally recognized presenters and performers, including Cornel
West, The Hold Steady, Vic Chesnutt, Over the Rhine, Baby Dee, Makoto Fujimura,
Andy Crouch and others.

Thursday evening will feature simultaneous concerts by The Hold Steady in the
Fine Arts Center and Vic Chesnutt and Baby Dee at the historic downtown venue,
the Ladies Literary Club. Saturday evening will feature Over the Rhine, with
other Friday and Saturday performers to be announced. Keynote speakers will
include Dr. Cornel West, Afro-American studies scholar at Princeton and author
of Hope on a Tightrope; Makoto Fujimura, visual artist and founder of the
International Arts Movement; and Andy Crouch, author of Culture Making:
Recovering Our Creative Calling.

The festival is glad to welcome Julie Lee, a visual and recording artist from
Nashville who has collaborated with artists like Alison Krauss and Vince Gill.
The criticism track will feature, among others, music writer Jessica Hopper who
selects songs for National Public Radio’s This American Life. Cathleen
Falsani, author of The God Factor: Inside the Spiritual Lives of Public People,
will bring a cultural critic’s perspective, while Western Michigan’s
Rebecca Farrugia will present on women’s DJ culture. Other presenters include
Charlie Peacock, critic Terry Mattingly, Nathan Johnson formerly of Cinematic
Underground, DJ Kenneth Thomas, author Steve Stockman, and more.

After the 2007 Festival, Michigan Daily writer Derek Barber analyzed his
experience this way: “…There is no tidy answer to the question of how
Christian faith influences the art being produced. Perhaps this is why the
Festival of Faith and Music and its artists are unique from other Christian
festivals and performers—there's no need for a simple answer.”
