March 23, 2005 == MEDIA ADVISORY

Parents looking for activities for their kids during spring break need look no further than Calvin College and its upcoming Petra: Lost City of Stone exhibition.

On Wednesday, April 6 and Thursday, April 7 Calvin will host area spring breakers for morning and afternoon craft times. Those two days of activities come just two days after Petra's official opening on April 4.

Time slots both days will be 9:30 to 11:30 am and 1:30 to 3:30 pm. Both days will see the college offer a variety of activities for kids ages three to 13, including making mosaics, creating jewelry, learning Arabic symbols and more. Calvin education students and volunteers will be assisting with the crafts, all of which will take place in the Board room of the Prince Conference Center, literally a stone's throw away from the Petra exhibition.

Calvin's DeAnna Doll is coordinating the activities and says all of the crafts will be "make & take" items that can be completed in 30 to 45 minutes each. She says the idea is that parents and their children can first see the exhibition and then spend some time making crafts. Or, if the exhibition is particularly busy at the time, parents and their kids can buy a timed ticket, spend time creating a craft and then enter the exhibition.

There is no fee for the craft time, but to enter the Petra: Lost City of Stone exhibition is $12 for adults, $8 for children ages 5-17 and free for children under five years of age.

In addition the Khazneh Café will be open for lunch and serving a variety of Middle Eastern sandwiches (gyros, shawarmas and pitas), salads and more. The Khazneh was the treasury in the ancient city of Petra in Jordan and was used as a dramatic setting in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Petra: Lost City of Stone is the most comprehensive exhibition ever presented on the ancient Middle Eastern city of Petra, and its creators, the Nabataeans. It will be at Calvin College from April 4 to August 15, 2005 for the third and final leg of its U.S. journey, and it features over 200 exceptional objects - many on display for the first time in North America.

The Calvin website for Petra has a host of resources, including a whole educators' section that also can be used by parents looking for fun things to do with their kids during spring break - things such as doing an anthropological study of everyday objects and artifacts, sorting through trash, drawing and using maps and much more.
