Calvin Sending Four to NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships;
VanScoyk Wraps up Standout Men's Golf Career at NCAA III Championships;
Recipients of Bere' Memorial and Kay Tiemersma Awards Announced
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
Calvin College will be sending four members of its track and field program to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships scheduled to be held at the University of Wisconsin-Lacrosse May 24-26.
Representing the men's team will be sophomore Caleb Ferguson. Representing the women's team will be senior Jenna Dyksen, junior Katie Diekema and sophomore Allison Rozell.
Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) will be making his second straight trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and will once again be competing in the 3,000 meter steeplechase.
Ferguson is seeded 10th in the steeplechase with a time of 9:08.13. A year ago, he placed 18th in the steeplechase at the national meet. Earlier this month, he was the MIAA champion in the steeplechase and earned a spot on the All-MIAA team. He ran his NCAA III Championships qualifying time Thursday night at the Gregory Invitational hosted by North Central College.
Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) is also making her second straight trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She will compete in the 100 meter hurdles where she is seeded 15th with a time of 14.39. Her nationals qualifying time came at the MIAA Championships earlier this month. She was later named to the All-MIAA team for the fourth consecutive year. A year ago, Dyksen competed in the 100 meter hurdles at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships and placed 12th.
Diekema (Kenmoore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) is making her second straight trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She will compete in the 1500 meter run where she is seeded fifth with a time of 4:30.89. Diekema ran her nationals qualifying time this past Thursday night at the North Central College Gregory Invitational. A year ago, Diekema took 15th in the 1500 meters at the national meet. This past March, Diekema qualified for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships in the mile run where she placed 11th. Diekema was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Runner for indoor track and field this past March. She was the MIAA indoor champion in the mile and 3,000 meter runs.
Earlier this month, she was the MIAA champion in the 1500 meters and was named to the All-MIAA Women's Outdoor Track and Field Team.
Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) is making her first trip to the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. She will compete in the javelin where she is seeded 18th (136-8). She tossed her national qualifying throw on March 23 at the Island Meet in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
MEN'S GOLF
GREENSBORO, N.C. - The storied career of Ben VanScoyk at Calvin College came to an end at the 2018 NCAA Division III Championships on Friday afternoon. The Calvin senior recorded a round of 76 in the fourth and final round of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships.
"It has been a blast coaching Ben through his college career," said Calvin head coach Dr. Brian Bolt. "Ben loves the game more than most. He gets excited about each new season. It's a tribute I his work ethic that he got better every year. I am very thankful for sharing these last four years with him. He has grown as a player and leader, and I will truly miss him and his fellow senior teammates, John and Matthew. They all left a legacy for Calvin golf to follow."
Methodist won the NCAA title for the 12th time in program history with 1159 strokes. Brian Peccie of Washington & Lee won a playoff to claim the individual title.
VanScoyk had a four-day total of 294 strokes to finish tied for 24th place. He battled throughout the week, including winning a four-man playoff to extend his career two more rounds.
A senior from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Ben VanScoyk finishes with the lowest career average in program history. With 74 rounds of golf under his belt, VanScoyk finished with an average of 73.53 strokes. Fellow senior, John Van Noord was right behind with an average of 74.34 strokes.
Earlier this week, Ben VanScoyk was named to the NCAA Division III CGAA Great Lakes All-Region Team for the fourth time in his career.
The Grand Rapids native was a four-time All-MIAA selection and was the MIAA Most Valuable Golfer in the 2015-16 season.
VanScoyk was a six-time medalist in his career. The lowest round of his career was at the 2015 Lou Collins Memorial Tournament, where he shot a round of 67.
The season, VanScoyk finished with a career-best average of 72.78 strokes.
He finished his career at Calvin with three birdies on the back nine, including on his final hole at No. 18.
"It has been an incredible experience," said Ben VanScoyk. "I have grown so much as a golfer and as a person. I have felt a great amount of support from the Calvin community in the last week as I have competed at nationals. The moments I have had at Calvin are ones I'll never forget."
BERE'/TIEMERSMA AWARDS RELEASE
Calvin College has announced the 2018 recipients of its highest athletic honors: the Beré Memorial Award and the Kay Tiemersma Athletic Award.
Ethan Valentine of Mason, Ohio, is this year's Beré Memorial Award winner while Jenna Lodewyk of Villa Park, Illinois, and Abby Van Harn of Grand Rapids - are this year's recipients of the Tiemersma Award.
The Beré Memorial Award has been presented annually by Calvin since 1951. The Beré honors the top senior male student-athlete, based on athletic ability, scholastic rank, character and leadership, and is selected by the school's male coaches and the members of the Athletics Committee. It is given in memory of Joe Beré, a Calvin student who was killed in a 1949 auto accident on his way to watch a Calvin basketball game. The winner is selected by the coaches of the school's men's sports and an Athletics Committee made up of students and non-physical education department faculty members.
This is the 45th year that Calvin has given the Tiemersma award--presented annually to the top senior female student-athlete. The award honors Kay Tiemersma, the first woman physical education teacher in the member schools of the Christian Schools International organization, and a pioneer in women's sports. Its presentation is based on athletic ability, scholastic standing, and character and leadership. The winner is selected by the coaches of the school's women's sports and an Athletics Committee made up of students and non-physical education department faculty members.
This year marks just the fifth time that the Tiemersma Award has been awarded to co-recipients.
Ethan Valentine
Ethan Valentine hails from Mason, Ohio. He is a graduate of William Mason High School. At Calvin, Valentine has been a four-year standout on the men's track and field team. Over the course of his collegiate career, Valentine has earned four NCAA III All-America awards and been named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Runner twice.
A 400 meter specialist, Valentine has been a four-time national qualifier to the NCAA III Track and Field Championships.
As a freshman in 2015, he earned All-American honors in the 400 meters at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing eighth. In 2016, he was an All-American once again in the 400 meters at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing seventh. In 2017, he was a two-time All-American - earning the award at both the NCAA III Indoor and NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 400 meters. At the 2017 Indoor National Meet, he finished seventh in the 400 meters. He then made a bid for a national title in the 400 meters at the 2017 Outdoor National Meet before finishing second. In the 400 meter prelims of the 2017 NCAA III Outdoor Championships, he posted the fastest time in Division III Track and Field that spring with a school-record time of 46.80.
A team captain, Valentine has led the Calvin men's track and field team to four MIAA outdoor titles and a pair of MIAA indoor crowns. He was the MIAA 400 meter outdoor and indoor champion in 2016, 2017 and 2018. He was named the MIAA's Most Outstanding Runner for indoor track and field in 2017 and for outdoor track and field in 2018.
In addition, he has been a three-time All-MIAA selection in both indoor and outdoor track and field. He was named to the Great Lakes All-Region Indoor Track and Field Team in 2016, 2017 and 2018 by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. He also received USTFCCCA Great Lakes All-Region honors outdoors in 2016 and 2017.
During his junior year, Valentine served as a residence assistant (RA) in the Calvin dormitories. He has also served as a volunteer with the Calvin Student Development Office.
Valentine graduated from Calvin this weekend with a double major in Chinese and biology. He is a two-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and has been a two-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team.
Valentine is the son of Amy and Andy Valentine.
Jenna Lodewyk
Jenna Lodewyk is from Villa Park, Illinois. She is a graduate of Timothy Christian High School. At Calvin, Lodewyk was a four-time All-American setter for the Calvin women's volleyball team.
As a freshman in 2014, Lodewyk was named the AVCA Division III National Freshman of the Year and to the AVCA Division III All-America third team as she helped lead Calvin to the semifinals of the NCAA III Tournament. She was subsequently named to the AVCA Division III All-America second team in 2015, 2016 and 2017. In 2016, she helped spark Calvin's run to a national title. She also helped lead Calvin to NCAA III Tournament appearances in 2015 and 2017 with the Knights advancing to the national semifinals in 2017.
At the conference level, she led Calvin to four consecutive MIAA regular season titles as well as MIAA Tournament crowns in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
Lodewyk was a four-time first team All-MIAA selection and a nine-time MIAA Player of the Week. She was also a four-time AVCA Great Lakes All-Region honoree.
In addition, she was named a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American, receiving third team honors in 2015, second team honors in 2016 and first team honors in 2017. In 2017 she was also named the Division III CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year in women's volleyball.
During her time as a student-athlete, she has been a member of the Calvin Women's Business Network and the Calvin Student Athlete Advisory Committee. She has also been a volunteer in Bridge Builders - a service learning program for Sunshine Gospel Ministries and Sunshine Enterprises.
A three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List, Lodewyk graduated this weekend with a major in business operations and a minor in community development.
She is the daughter of Kim and Bill Lodewyk. Jenna Lodewyk is the second member of her family to receive the Kay Tiemersma Award as her mother Kim (Lautenbach) was the recipient in 1986 as a volleyball and track and field athlete.
Abby Van Harn
Abby Van Harn is from Grand Rapids, Michigan. She is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Van Harn recently completed a record-setting career on the Calvin women's swimming and diving team.
During her career, she was a nine-time NCAA III All-American and a nine-time NCAA III Honorable Mention All-American. She was named the Division III National Swimmer of the Week three times over the course of her career.
As an individual, she earned All-America honors four times, finishing third in the 100 freestyle at the 2017 NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships and fifth in the event at the 2016 and 2018 national meet. She also placed fifth in the 50 freestyle at the 2017 NCAA III Championships. She was also a part of five NCAA III All-America relays teams. This past March, she helped the Calvin women's team finish 11th as a team at the national meet marking Calvin's highest team placement since 2009.
Van Harn helped lead Calvin to four consecutive MIAA regular season titles. She was the MIAA's Most Valuable Swimmer in 2017 and 2018 and was a four-time All-MIAA honoree. She captured four consecutive MIAA individual titles in the 100 and 200 freestyle events and also claimed league titles in the 50 freestyle (2017 and 2018) and 200 freestyle.
Van Harn holds MIAA records in the 50 freestyle (23.17) and 100 freestyle (50.04) and was part of Calvin's MIAA record-setting 200, 400 and 800 freestyle relay teams. She holds school records in the 50 freestyle (23.15) and 100 freestyle (50.04) and has been a part of Calvin's record-setting 200 medley, 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relays.
In the classroom, Van Harn has been a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List. In addition, she has been a two-time College Swim Coaches Scholar All-American selection. She has also been a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee at Calvin and served on the Student Advisory Board for the Center of Counseling and Wellness.
She graduated this past weekend with a major in exercise science and a minor in public health. She will attend the University of Michigan next fall to pursue her master's degree in public health.
Van Harn is the daughter of Kim and Mark Van Harn.
