CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR MAY 8, 2018 NCAA III Tournament Ticket Prices and Times Set for Softball and Women's Lacrosse; Valentine and VanHouten Named MIAA Most Outstanding Men's Track and Field Athletes; Calvin Women's Track and Field Trio Receive All-MIAA Honors; Baseball Lands Five on All-MIAA Honor Teams SOFTBALL The start time for the NCAA III Tournament opener on Thursday for the Calvin softball team is set. Calvin (30-8) will face Franklin College (29-10) in a first round NCAA III Tournament game at noon Thursday afternoon at Hope College. Calvin will be competing in the double-elimination, four-team tournament. Host Hope will face Greenville College in the game to follow on Thursday. Games will be held at Wolters Stadium, 303 Fairbanks Avenue, on the Hope College campus. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for youth each day. Tickets can be purchased at Wolters Stadium 1 hour before the first game each day. Tickets will be not sold in advance. The game will take place at Denison's Piper Stadium. Ticket prices are $6 for adults, $3 for students (ages 13-21) and $2 for children (ages (3-12). Valentine (Mason, Oh./William Mason HS) is receiving the award for the first time in outdoor track and field. He was the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner for indoor track and field in 2017. Valentine helped the Calvin men's track and field team to its sixth consecutive MIAA title last weekend at the MIAA Championships, winning the 400 meters (48.76), taking fourth in the 200 meters (22.78) and anchoring Calvin's first place 4x400 meter relay team that clocked in with a time of 3:17.35. Valentine ran the anchor leg of the relay and made up a significant deficit in the final lap to win the relay race by less than two-tenths of a second. His win in the 400 meters was his third consecutive MIAA outdoor 400 meter title. VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) is receiving the award for the second straight year in outdoor track and field. He joins Nate Meckes (2003, 2005 & 2006) and Erik Holstege (2014 & 2015) as multi-year MIAA MOFP recipients from Calvin. At the MIAA Championships last week, VanHouten wracked up 22 points, winning the discus (143-6) and taking third in the shot put (45-0 1/2) and hammer throw (166-1). His discus title was his second straight win in the event. In addition, Valentine and VanHouten have both been named to the All-MIAA men's outdoor track and field team with Valentine receiving the honor for the third consecutive year and VanHouten picking up the award for the second straight spring. They are joined on the All-MIAA team from Calvin by senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS), senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), juniors James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) and Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and sophomores Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) and Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS). Philipose captured the 5,000 meter run at the MIAA Championships with a time of 15:10.40. It was his first MIAA outdoor title in the event and marks the second straight spring he has been named to the All-MIAA team. Buteyn is making his third straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. He was the the MIAA champion last week in the 800 meters with a time of 1:56.52. He also ran on Calvin's first place 4x400 mete relay team. Peterson also ran on Calvin's first place 4x400 meter relay team and added a fourth place finish in the 800 meters (1:58.80). He is receiving All-MIAA honors for the second straight spring. Jeinga is making his second straight appearance on the All-MIAA team. He was a member of Calvin's first place 4x400 mete relay and took second in the 800 meter run (1:56.76). Ferguson is also a repeat All-MIAA selection. At the MIAA Championships last Friday, he repeated as MIAA champion in the steeplechase, winning the race in a time of 9:32.31. Johnson is making his first appearance on the All-MIAA team. He was the MIAA champion in the 1500 meters last Friday with a time of 4:06.10. WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD Calvin seniors Jenna Dyksen and Kayla Van Lenten and junior Katie Diekema have been named to the All-MIAA team in women's track and field. Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) is making her fourth consecutive appearance on the All-MIAA women's track and field team. At the MIAA Championships, Dyken claimed league titles in the 100 meter hurdles (14.39) and long jump (18-5.75) while placing second in the 200 meters (25.94) and third in the triple jump (35-8.75). She also ran on 4x100 and 4x400 meter relay teams that placed fifth. Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA team. At the MIAA Championships she was the league champion in the pole vault (10-10) while finishing third in the high jump (5-0.25). Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) is making her first appearance on the All-MIAA outdoor track and field team. At the MIAA Championships last week, Diekema took home a league crown in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:48.45. She also placed second in the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:35.44. BASEBALL Five members of the Calvin baseball team have received All-MIAA honors. Senior Nate DeZwaan and junior Jonathan Keane have been named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Ryan Pena, sophomore Trevor VanDuyn and freshman Ricky Padilla were named to the All-MIAA second team. A third baseman, DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS) is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the first time in his career. DeZwaan finished 10th in the MIAA batting race with a .388 average in conference play. He also finished sixth in the MIAA in on-base percentage (.471) and walks (15). In addition, he finished fifth in base hits (40), seventh in doubles (9) and 11th in total bases (49). In Saturday's doubleheader against Alma, he rapped the 40th double of his career to become Calvin's all-time leader in two-base hits. A shortstop and a pitcher, Keane is also receiving All-MIAA first team accolades for the first time in his career. Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) was 4-2 in conference play as a pitcher with a 2.91 earned run average that included 41 strikeouts and just seven walks. He finished fifth in the MIAA in victories and seventh in earned run average. At the plate, he batted .260 in league play 21 runs scored and 15 runs batted in. He also had three sacrifice hits, three stolen bases and 10 extra-base hits including three home runs which ranked fifth in the conference. An outfielder, Pena is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the first time. Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) batted .323 in league play with 17 RBI, 17 runs scored and 11 extra-base hits including nine doubles which ranked seventh in the MIAA. He also compiled a .957 fielding percentage. VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the first time. A standout on the mound, VanDuyn was 3-3 in league play with three saves and a conference ERA of 2.81. VanDuyn finished second in the league in saves, fifth in ERA and ninth in victories. His save in Calvin's 10-7 win over Alma on Saturday allowed the Knights to clinch a spot in the upcoming MIAA Tournament. Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) is also receiving All-MIAA second team accolades for the first time. A second baseman, Padilla finished second in the MIAA batting race with a .418 conference average. He led the MIAA in base hits (46) and at bats (110) and was second in doubles (11). He finished third in total bases ((60) and was sixth in slugging percentage (.545). He will head into MIAA play holding a 14-game hitting streak. In the field, he compiled a .960 fielding percentage in league play and helped turn 14 double plays.
