Women's Lacrosse Downs Hope in MIAA Tournament Semifinals - To Host Saint Mary's in MIAA Tourney Finale;
All-MIAA Honors Announced for Tennis, Softball and Lacrosse;
Anna Gernant Named Division III National Softball Pitcher of the Week
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 14, Hope 8
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team sank the Flying Dutch on a stormy Wednesday night, 14-8. The victory in the rivalry game sends Calvin to 11-5 on the year and to the MIAA Finals on Saturday night against Saint Mary's. Hope falls to 8-7 on the year and Calvin improves to 10-1 in the rivalry.
"I'm very proud of the way the team finished this game tonight," said Calvin head coach Blake Boehm. "They handled the lightening delay very well and came out strong in the 2nd half. Ellis was outstanding in the cage tonight and that allowed us to keep the pressure on offensively."
Junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) started the scoring on Wednesday setting up to the left of the keeper and scored off a pass from sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian). Emma Verrett then scored 27 seconds after on a free position shot.
Senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) charged at the net and got the ball past the keeper to make it 3-0.
Hope cut into the lead with a goal from Carly Pieri
The two teams were forced off the field for over an hour due to lightning in the area.
Hope scored after the break on a shot from Rachel Elder.
Junior Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) snapped the skid on a free position shot.
Emily Deane cut the Calvin lead to one a minute later.
Schneemann struck again two minutes later to double up the Dutch at 6-3.
The Orange and Blue closed the first half on a 2-0 run to trim the Calvin lead to 6-5 at halftime.
The Knights came out to a blistering start in the second half and opened on a 5-0 run. Emma Verrett started the scoring in the second half.
Amanda Davio scored up a man 25 seconds later on a short angle free position shot.
Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) juked past the Hope defender with 24 minutes left and sank the Hope keeper alone on an island.
Kelly Pepper tallied the next two Calvin goals.
Carly Pieri scored for Hope on a free position shot to stop the bleeding.
Junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) reopened the wound 44 second later and she juked her defender, causing her to fall and Slachter cruised to the net.
After a Hope goal, Amanda Davio reached the 200-goal mark on a free position shot. She scored again 56 seconds later.
Junior Ellis Chalfant had a dominating performance in the net for the Knights. The Calvin junior came up with many key saves and finished the evening with 14 saves and three ground balls.
Laurel Frederickson finished with six saves for Hope.
Possession was key on Wednesday. The Knights won 17 of the 24 draw controls. Emma Verrett finished with a game-high seven draw controls and senior Madeline Baas tallied four.
Amanda Davio led all players with four goals.
Saturday will be a rematch of the tightest game of the year for Calvin. Calvin defeated Saint Mary's in Indiana, 16-15. Amanda Davio scored the overtime goal.
