CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 5, 2018

BASEBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 2
Calvin 5, Albion 2

ALBION, Mich. – Calvin swept both ends of a doubleheader at Albion Thursday afternoon, taking game one 3-2 and winning game two 5-2.

Scheduled for seven innings, game one went an inning extra as the Britons (6-16 overall, 4-6 MIAA) tied the game at two with a run in the bottom of the sixth.

In the eighth, Calvin (9-11 overall, 7-3 MIAA) scored the go-ahead run. Freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) led off the inning with a single to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS). Padilla moved up a base on a fly-out to right by junior Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and then scored on a wild-pitch.

Padilla’s winning run came in unusual fashion as junior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian HS) struck out but reached base on a wild pitch on a swinging strike three.

The wild pitch allowed Padilla to scamper home with the go-ahead run.

Sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS) had a strong bottom half of the eighth, striking out the first two batters he faced before Albion extended the inning on a fielding error.

With a runner on base, VanDuyn struck out his third hitter of the evening to seal his third victory of the year.

Keane went the first 5.1 innings before giving way to VanDuyn in the sixth. Keane struck out eight batters and walked only one during his time on the mound.

Calvin outhit Albion 9-7 in the game one win. Padilla was 3-for-3 at the plate and walked once. Senior Nate DeZwaan was 2-for-4 with a double.

Padilla and Kuperus had one RBI each in the win.

In game two, Calvin built a 5-0 lead and held on for the win in the bottom of the seventh as Albion scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh and had the tying run at the plate. Junior Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East HS) came in the seventh to get the final two outs of the game and pick up his third save of the season.

Padilla and Kuperus both went 3-for-4 at the plate with Kuperus driving in two runs and Padilla driving in one. DeZwaan had a pair of hits – both of which were doubles. Keane and sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) both drove in one run apiece.

Sophomore Sam Schellenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS) tripled and later scored a run back in the third.
Junior Clay Francisco (Delton/Thornapple Kellogg HS) went six innings to pick up his third victory of the season. Francisco struck out four and walked only one.

Calvin is scheduled to host Albion in a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
