MORE SOFTBALL

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Freshman Grace Stock was named the Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division III Player of the Week on Wednesday by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association. This is the first time in her career that she has claimed the honor.

"This is a tremendous honor for Grace and our program," said Calvin head coach Becky Hilgert. "Grace was solid both offensively and defensively for our team last week. Our players who hit ahead of her did a good job of setting the table for her to attack at the plate. She also did a nice job behind the plate keeping runners at bay and controlling the pace of the game with our pitching staff. What most impresses me about Grace is her high softball IQ which I believe is one of her biggest assets."

A freshman from Vicksburg, Michigan, Grace Stock helped the Knights go 4-0 last week, with victories over Anderson and Adrian.

Stock had a phenomenal week at the plate, with 10 hits at 11 at bats. Stock finished the week with a slugging percentage of 1.636 and led Calvin with 10 hits, three doubles, one triple, one home run, six runs and 10 RBI.

Stock led the Knights in game one of the Anderson series with two singles and a home run.

In game two against the Ravens, Stock finished with four RBI.

The Calvin freshman hit her first triple of the season in game one of the Adrian series.

Stock closed the week with two doubles and two RBI against Adrian in game two.

Defensively, Stock threw out the one runner attempting to steal against her and collected 22 putouts and three assists.

On Monday, Stock was named the MIAA Co-Player of the Week.

Stock and the Knights return to action on Thursday at Saint Mary's.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 16, Alma 3

ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team shook off frigid and blustery conditions to claim a 16-3 conference victory at Alma College Tuesday evening.

The Knights are now 4-5 overall and 2-0 in MIAA action heading into an important conference showdown against Albion Saturday at Zuidema Field.

Calvin scored the first three goals of Saturday's contest as junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos HS) and junior Kelly Pepper (Wycoff, NJ/Indian Hills HS) scored in the first three-and-a-half minutes of the game for the Knights.

Alma's Brianna Soriano scored to make it 3-1 but Pepper followed with a tally to give the Knights a 4-1 lead. Alma's Olivia Benoit scored with 21:30 to cut the deficit in half.

The score remained the same over the next 11:41 of play before the Knights broke loose for four goals over the final 8:49 of the half in taking an 8-2 lead. Pepper closed out the half with a goal with just 16 seconds remaining to give Calvin an extra boost of energy.

Energized, Calvin scored four goals in the opening six minutes of the second half to create a running clock and the Knights were never threatened the rest of the way.

Davio and Pepper scored four goals apiece to lead the Calvin scoring attack while Slachter and junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) both had two goals and two assists. Junior Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS) had a career-high three goals on just five shots.

Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) also had a goal for the Knights.
Calvin outshot Alma 39-17.

Sophomore Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and Country Day School) had four saves in 40 minutes of action while freshman Meghan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) came on for the final 20 minutes to record two saves.

Calvin scooped up 27 ground balls led by sophomore Sarah Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe, Chisipite Senior School) with four ground balls.

Sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian HS) had three ground balls while also causing three Alma turnovers.

Slachter amassed a match-high five draw controls.
