Softball Sweeps Adrian in MIAA Opener;
Baseball Splits Twinbill With Trine;
Men's Tennis Opens MIAA Schedule With Win at Alma

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin softball team stands in first place in the MIAA with a pair of victories over Adrian on Friday. The Knights improve to 15-2 on the year with a sweep on the Bulldogs. Calvin only needed five innings to beat the Bulldogs 8-0 in game one and took game two, 7-0. Adrian falls to 8-10 in 2018.
"We had another nice day at the plate offensively," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "It is nice to score early to give our defense a boost. Our defense made some big plays in both games in key moments to keep the momentum in our favor."
Freshman Grace Stock (Vicksburg, Mich./Vicksburg) started the scoring in the first inning on a triple into the gap in right-center field to score senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) then singled down the left-field line to score Stock.
Sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East) finished the first inning scoring with a double to left field to score Anna Gernant and junior Abby Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian).
Abby Colon cleared the bases in the second inning/ Colon hit a double that scored junior Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian), junior Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) and Grace Stock.
Senior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) then singled up the middle of the infield to score Colon.
Anna Gernant tallied nine strikeouts in the victory. Gernant also threw her first no-hitter of the season on Friday and the third of her career.
Kayla Groen led the game with three hits.
Grace Stock loved the first inning on Friday. Stock struck again in game two with a double to left field that scored Jessica Brasser. Abby Colon then singled to right field to score Stock.
In the second inning, Jessica Brasser singled up the middle of the infield to score Rachel Borden. Grace Stock then had a sacrifice fly to score Maddie DeGroot.
Abby Colon triple in the fourth inning that scored Grace Stock and Maddie DeGroot. Anna Gernant then safely got Colon across home plate on a single.
The Calvin defense stood firm in game two and got out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the sixth inning. Sophomore Bri Noorman (Jenison, Mich./Covenant Christian) blasted a laser from left field to throw out Lenington at the plate. Freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) then struck out the next two batters.
Borst notched four strikeouts in her seventh victory of the year.
Maddie DeGroot finished with a game-high three hits and Abby Colon finished with three RBI.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday in a battle of first-place teams in the MIAA. The Maroon and Gold travel to Indiana for a battle with the Belles of Saint Mary's College.

ANGOLA, Ind. - Calvin concluded a four-games series with Trine University, splitting a doubleheader Friday afternoon.
Calvin (7-11 overall, 5-3 MIAA) took the opener 3-2 and lost the nightcap 7-5.
The Knights took three of the four games in the series after sweeping a Thursday doubleheader from Trine in Grand Rapids.
Calvin currently sits in second place in the MIAA league standings.
In game one, Calvin received a superb pitching performance from sophomore right hander Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison HS). VanDuyn tossed a seven-inning complete-game victory to up his season record to 2-2 while lowering his earned run average to 3.79. VanDuyn struck out a career-high 11 batters while walking only two.
Junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wisc./Brookfield Central HS) put Calvin up 2-0 with a two-run homer, also plating sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wisc./Brookfield East HS) who led off the game with a walk.
Keane then doubled in third and came home on an RBI single by junior Miles Kuperus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) to give the Knights a 3-0 lead.
Trine (8-9 overall, 2-6 MIAA) answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth but left the bases full as VanDuyn came up with a clutch inning-ending strikeout.
VanDuyn struck out the side in the sixth and closed out the game with a strikeout with the tying run on second base.
Keane, Kuperus and freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Ca./Poway HS) all had two hits apiece.
In game two, Calvin trailed 2-0 through four innings but came up with a four-run fifth keyed by a two-run RBI double by Hyndiuk and an RBI double by senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian HS).
Trine came up with a run in the bottom of the fifth but the Knights came back with a run in the sixth on an RBI double by sophomore Sam Schellenberg (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern HS).
Calvin's 5-3 lead was quickly erased however as Trine scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and held the Knights scoreless the rest of the way to claim the victory.
Junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Ca./J Serra Catholic HS) was 2-for-2 for the Knights. Sophomore Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) got the start and gave Calvin four strong innings, scattering six hits and allowing only two runs.
Calvin used four relief pitchers in the game two defeat with freshman Chris Ralph (Naperville, Il./Waubonsie Valley HS) taking the loss for the Knights.
Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts Albion in a conference doubleheader at 2 p.m. at Calvin Field.

ALMA, Mich. - The Calvin men's tennis team won its second-straight victory on Friday afternoon. The Knights opened the MIAA portion of the schedule with a 9-0 victory at Alma. The victory moves Calvin to 10-2 on the year and sends the Scots to 6-7 on the season.
"It is always nice to get a win in the conference," said head coach John Ross. "I was pleased with how we played today. We will get some rest and then prepare for another tough week."
The Knights started the day in singles play.
Senior David Brown (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich) earned the first point at No. 4 singles. Brown bounced Tristan Fox, 6-1, 6-1.
Freshman Max Stallings (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North) swept Quinn Summerfield at No. 6 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Junior Jason Wolters (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) topped Brandon Ralston at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-3.
Junior Jose Larrea (Caracas, Venezuela/U.E. Colegio San Jose) defeated Luke Van Fleet at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-4.
At No. 3 singles, senior Matt Van Winkle (St. Joseph, Mich./St. Joseph) sank Noah Ackerman, 7-6, 7-5.
Sophomore Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán (Tarija, Bolivia/Felipe Palazon) edged BJ Schutte in three sets, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Jose Larrea and Max Stallings shut down Alma's Ralston and Summerfield at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
At No. 2 doubles, Guzman and Brown bounced Ackerman and Fox, 8-2.
Van Winkle and Wolters closed the book on the Scots at No. 1 doubles, with an 8-4 victory over Schutte and Van Fleet.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday in the rivalry match at home against Hope.
