GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin baseball team split a home doubleheader with rival Hope College. Hope won the opener 10-2 with Calvin winning game two by a 6-2 score.
The two teams began the four-game conference series this past Saturday with the rivals splitting a doubleheader in Holland. Hope took the first game 1-0, while Calvin claimed a 3-1 game-two victory.
After Monday's games, Calvin and Hope are both 4-10 overall with 2-2 MIAA records.
In game one, sophomore Trevor VanDuyn (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings. Freshman Henry Breems (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Micah Berlage (Dexter, Mich./Dexter) both saw time in relief.
The first three innings were scoreless, but the Flying Dutchmen scored a trio of runs in the fourth inning to take a lead they would never give up. Hope added two more runs in the sixth inning before scoring five more in the top of the seventh to lead 10-0.
The Knights posted two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to avoid being shutout. With one out, sophomore Jeremy Clark (San Diego, Calif./Mt. Carmel) pinch hit and singled through the left side. Senior Kyle Houts (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) followed with a home run to left field to put the Knights on the board. Despite the late push by the Knights, the deficit was too large to overcome and the Flying Dutch claimed the eight-run victory.
Calvin logged only three hits in the loss, while Hope posted 10. Hope pitcher Max Gaishin went 6.1 innings to earn the win.
In game two, Calvin received a strong start from freshman Mark Primus (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) who tossed five shutout innings to earn his first collegiate career win. Primus faced 20 batters and gave up only one hit, while earning four strikeouts.
The Knights jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning. Calvin's first two batters, sophomore Quinn Hyndiuk (Elm Grove, Wis./Brookfield East) and senior Nate DeZwaan (Hamilton, Mich./Holland Christian), got on base via a walk and a hit by pitch. Freshman Ricky Padilla (Poway, Calif./Poway) came up with an RBI double to bring Hyndiuk around. Junior Jonathan Keane (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) delivered a sacrifice line-out to center field to score DeZwaan.
Junior Beau Redfield (Cedar Springs, Mich./Northpointe Christian) walked and Padilla advanced to third on a passed fourth ball. With two outs, Redfield stole second and a two-RBI single up the middle by sophomore Logan Marshall (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) gave the Knights an early four-run lead.
The Flying Dutchmen tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth inning. DeZwaan led off with a double to center field. With two outs, Redfield delivered an RBI single to put Calvin up 5-0.
Junior pitcher Logan Walker (Imlay City, Mich./Lapeer East) came on to pitch in the sixth inning. Walker gave up a pair of singles with two outs, but came up with a strikeout to strand the two runners.
Hope got on the board in the seventh inning as freshman Evan Maday delivered a two-out solo home run. Jordon Fairchild followed with a single up the middle, but Walker was able to strand him as the next batter flew out to center field.
Calvin added another run in the bottom of the eighth inning as Hope committed two errors and junior Ryan Pena (Lake Forest, Calif./J Serra Catholic) earned a two-out single. With the bases loaded, DeZwaan walked to bring in Marshall. The Knights held a 6-0 lead heading into the final inning.
Sophomore Justin Paauwe (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) pitched the final two innings for the Knights. Hope scored on a one-out, bases-loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the ninth inning, but Paauwe stranded the two runners to lift the Knights to victory.
Padilla went 3-for-5 at the plate to lead the Knights, while Marshall posted a team-high two RBIs.
