MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Calvin men's swimming & diving team started the four-day 2018 NCAA Division III Men's Swimming & Diving Championships on Wednesday in Indianapolis, Indiana. The Maroon and Gold sit in 20th place with 12 points.
The Knights made the consolation finals in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi), junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) clocked in at 1:30.61 and finished in 11th place.
In the diving well, senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) placed 20th on the 3-meter board at 407.40 points.
In the 500-yard freestyle, freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman) finished in 34th place at 4:42.71.
Tanner Vincent recorded a time of 1:55.08 in the 200-yard individual medley in 44th place.
The Knights return to action in the pool on Thursday.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Calvin women's swimming & diving team opened competition on Wednesday at the 2018 NCAA Division III Women's Swimming & Diving Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana. After the first day of competition, the Knights have 2.5 points.
In the 50-yard freestyle, senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) placed 14th with a time of 23.62 in the consolation finals. In the prelims, sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) finished with a time of 22.88 to finish in 32nd place.
The morning session started with the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) touched the wall at 5:07.44 to finish in 33rd place.
The Knights placed 29th in the 200-yard medley relay on Wednesday. The team of junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron), Emily Gunderson and sophomore Libby Engle (Troy, Mich./Troy) finished at 1:48.48.
The Knights return to the pool on Thursday.
WOMEN'S GOLF
LAKE WALES, Fl. - The Calvin women's golf team took second at a triangular hosted by Webber International University on Wednesday with a team score of 387 strokes.
Wednesday's competition took place at Lake Wales Country Club.
Carleton College (Mn.) took first place with a team score of 338.
Calvin was led by freshman Linnea McDonough (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater HS) with a round of 92.
Freshman Amanda Scholten (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was right behind with a 93 while freshman McKenna Smith (Bridgman, Mich./Bridgman HS) had a 99.
Senior Gen Best (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) had a 103 while senior Elizabeth Scholten (Wyoming, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had a 107 and junior Katy Hamilton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) had a 113.
Calvin returns to action on April 5 when it competes in a match play competition with Cornerstone University at Thornapple Pointe Golf Club at 2 p.m.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Colorado 9, Calvin 0
ORLANDO, Fla. - The Knights fell to Colorado College on Wednesday afternoon. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was postponed due to severe weather in central Florida. The Tigers came out on top 9-0 to send Calvin to 5-3 on the year.
"We faced a really good team today," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We will use today as a learning experience and we will use this to get better for the MIAA season, which we know will be tough again this year."
The Knights put up a fight at No. 1 doubles on Wednesday. The freshman duo of Leah Newhof (Caledonia, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Madeline Brouwer (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) fell to Allie Burak and Jenna McDonald, 8-6.
Sophomore Brittney Statema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) was the only Knight to take a set in singles play. Taking the first set from Madison Doerre, 6-3. Dorre won the match, 3-6, 6-0, 10-1.
Calvin returns to the court on Thursday to face Grinnell.
WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Worcester State 13, Calvin 10
ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team was edged in a tight battle against Worcester State on Wednesday morning, with the Lancers winning, 13-10.
The Wednesday game was a game of runs, with Worchester State opening on a 3-0 run.
Senior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School) sparked a 6-0 run for Calvin, with the first goal of the day for the Maroon and Gold on a free-position shot.
With under 10 minutes remaining in the half, junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) poked the ball past the WSU keeper.
Senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) tied the game with 5:39 remaining in the first half to send the teams to halftime tied at three.
Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) gave Calvin the lead on a free-position shot.
Junior Genevieve Schneemann (Farmington, Mich./Farmington) scored 40 seconds later from a pass from Amanda Davio.
19 seconds later, Kelly Pepper found the back of the net.
The Lancers tied the game with three-straight goals over a six-minute stretch.
The Maroon and Gold responded with three-straight goals of their own from Kelly Pepper, Amanda Davio and Emma Hall.
Worcester closed the game on a 7-1 run. The lone Calvin goal came from Kelly Pepper on a free position shot.
Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) posted seven saves on Wednesday.
Amanda Davio led Calvin with seven shots against WSU.
Emma Hall finished with a team-high two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) had six draw controls.
Calvin closes spring break action on Friday against Western New England.
