MONDAY RECAP
Calvin 8, Wooster 2
Calvin 1, New Paltz State 0
CLERMONT, Fla. - The Calvin softball team continued its best start to a season in program history with a pair of victories on Monday afternoon at the PFX Spring Games. The Knights improved to 8-0 on the year with an 8-2 victory over Wooster and a thrilling 1-0 victory over The State University of New York-New Paltz.
"Two more hard-fought games today in the heat and dodging the severe weather," said head coach Becky Hilgert. "I thought our pitching staff was pretty solid keeping the opposing hitters off balance and defensively we made plays behind them. Offensively, we struggled at times to string hits together, but we found a way to get enough runs behind big offensive days from Jess, Abby, and Rachel."
Junior Abby Colon (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) started the scoring for the Knights in the third inning against Wooster. Colon blasted the ball over the head of the center fielder to score senior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and junior Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg).
The Knights struck again in the fifth inning. Jessica Brasser laid down an effective bunt and scored Rachel Borden. Abby Colon then singled up the middle to score Jessica Brasser.
The Scots struck back in the sixth inning to cut the Calvin lead to 4-1.
Jessica Brasser got back on the scoreboard in the sixth inning with a single to center field to score Rachel Borden and sophomore Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East).
Maddie DeGroot scored on a Wooster error and Jessica Brasser scored off a single from Abby Colon.
Wooster scored another run in the seventh inning to finish at 8-2.
Junior Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) recorded her third victory of the year with nine strikeouts. Kennedy Geiger (Clarksville, Mich./Lake Odessa) pitched the final inning of the game.
Jessica Brasser and Abby Colon finished with three hits.
The Knights found themselves in a defensive battle against New Paltz on Monday.
The lone run came in the sixth inning off a single from sophomore Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake) to score Abby Colon.
With the Hawks down to their last out and a 2-2 pitch count, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky to delay the game.
The delay was no problem for freshman Ellie Borst (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) recorded a strikeout to end the game. Borst tallied nine strikeouts on Monday.
The Knights will play Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Benedictine on Tuesday.
