Men's and Women's Lacrosse Teams Drop Non-Conference Matches Saturday Afternoon

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Kenyon 19, Calvin 16

GAMBIER, Ohio - The Calvin women's lacrosse team opened the 2018 season with a hard-fought loss at Kenyon on Saturday afternoon. After trailing by six goals, the Knights cut the deficit to 16-17, but Kenyon came out on to 19-16. Kenyon improves to 2-2 with the win.
The Ladies of Kenyon put the first three goals on the scoreboard on Saturday.
Junior Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) put the Knights on the score sheet with a goal. Junior Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) tallied the assist.
Trailing 5-1, Sophomore Jaime Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) found the back of the Kenyon net. Van De Burg struck again a minute later.
Sophomore Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) made it a one-goal game with 17 minutes left in the first half.
After two Kenyon goals, senior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) responded with two goals of her own.
The Purple and White went on a 6-0 run over the stretch of six minutes.
Emma Verrett snapped the skid with a shot past the goalie with 6:21 left in the half.
Down a player, Kelly Pepper scored a short-handed goal.
The Knights went into halftime trailing, 13-8.
Emma Verrett struck again with 22:48 left in the game to cut the deficit to 9-14.
Junior Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) netted herself a power-play goal off a pass from Kelly Pepper. Amanda Davio struck a minute later.
Trailing 11-17, the Knights caught fire and scored the next five goals.
Emma Tilma started the streak with Kelly Pepper earning the assist. Pepper added a goal 45 second later.
On a player advantage, junior Lauryn Slachter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) scored her first goal of the game.
Kelly Pepper fooled the Kenyon keeper on a free position shot.
With 4:07 remaining, Emma Verrett sent the ball in into the back of the net on a free position shot.
The Ladies scored the next two goals, including a goal as time expired to win, 19-16.
Junior Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis Country Day School) and freshman Meghan Economou (Hartland, Mich./Hartland) both recorded four saves on Saturday.
The Knights were outshot 39-34 against Kenyon
The Maroon and Gold held a 19-17 advance on draw controls. Madeline Baas led Calvin with 11 draw controls.
Kelly Pepper and Emma Verrett led Calvin with four goals.
Kelly Pepper and Alyssa Gagnon finished with a team-high three ground balls.
Leading Calvin was Emma Verrett with two caused turnovers.
The Knights return to Ohio on Friday at Capital.

MEN'S LACROSSE
DePauw 15, Calvin 7

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team faced off against DePauw University on Saturday afternoon at Grand Rapids Christian High School. The Knights concluded their two-game home stand with a 16-7 loss. Saturday's contest marked the third consecutive year the two teams have met in men's lacrosse, with the Tigers holding a 3-0 advantage.
Calvin falls to 0-4 on the season, while DePauw improves to 2-1 overall. The Knights dropped a tough 8-4 decision to North Central College last Saturday, while DePauw claimed a 22-3 win over MIAA member Kalamazoo last Saturday in Greencastle, Indiana. DePauw is a member of the traditionally strong North Coast Athletic Conference.
The Tigers struck first as DePauw's Ben Davis notched his fifth goal of the season less than two minutes into the game. The Knights' answered with a pair of goals to take an early lead. Just under six minutes into the game, senior Michael Winkler (La Quinta, Calif./Palm Desert) fed freshman Noah Boelens (Round Lake, Ill./Grayslake Central) to get Calvin on the board. Calvin won the ensuing faceoff and Winkler followed with another Knights' goal, his first of the season, just eight seconds after Boelens' scoring play.
DePauw responded with three straight goals to earn a 4-2 advantage at the end of the first quarter. The Tigers' Nate Greenberg scored a pair of goals, while Patrick Durnien contributed one.
The Knights capitalized on a man-advantage opportunity early in the second quarter. Freshman Jacob Gandara (Santa Clarita, Calif./West Ranch) scored his first collegiate goal forty seconds into the quarter to make it a one-goal game. Junior Max Foster (Broomfield Hills, Mich./Brother Rice) earned the assist on the play.
The Tigers outscored the Knights 5-0 in the remainder of the second quarter to carry a 9-3 lead into halftime. DePauw outshot Calvin 26-13 in the first half.
The Tigers used a pair of goals to build an eight-goal lead early in the third quarter. Sophomore Griffin Sparling (Novi, Mich./Novi) broke the Knights' scoreless spell, finding the back of the net three minutes into the second half. As the midpoint of the half neared, Calvin freshman Joe Son (Aldie, Va./John Champe) scored to make the score 11-5, still in favor of the Tigers. Sparling and junior Noah Nedd (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) earned assists on Son's first collegiate goal.
DePauw scored with four minutes remaining in the quarter before Calvin freshman Nathan Jindra (South Bend, Ind./John Adams) answered, scoring his first collegiate goal to reduce the deficit to six goals. The Tigers scored the final goal of the third quarter to lead 13-6 heading into the final 15 minutes of play.
Son scored his second goal of the afternoon early in the fourth quarter to bring the Knights within six goals of the Tigers. Boelens earned the assist on the scoring play. However, DePauw outscored Calvin 3-0 in the remainder of the final quarter to roll to a nine-goal victory.
The Tigers outshot the Knights 51-31 on the afternoon, while scooping up 41 ground balls compared to Calvin's 23. DePauw won 18-26 face-offs. Calvin completed 14-16 of its clear attempts.
Son led the Knights' offense with two goals on five shots, while also earning four ground balls. Winkler posted a team-high six shots for one goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Mitchell Wong (Schaumburg, Ill/Schaumburg) recorded 19 saves in the loss, while scooping up four ground balls. Wong was named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week this past Monday after playing in his first collegiate game last Saturday where he posted 21 saves. He is the second Calvin men's lacrosse player to claim this honor this season and in program history.
The Knights hit the road for a pair of games next week in Wisconsin. Calvin is back in action on Thursday as they journey to Marian College. Game time is set for 8 p.m.
