Track and Field Teams Have Busy Night of Action at GVSU Big Meet / Aquinas College Little Meet;
Cross Country Teams Receive Academic Honors From USTFCCCA

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich, - The Calvin men's track and field team had strong showings at the Aquinas College Little Meet and Grand Valley State Big Meet on Friday.

Calvin was represented at the Grand Valley State Big Meet by members of its distance squad.

In the 5,000 meter run, senior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) had a time of 14:57.47. Senior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) followed in 15:12.03 with sophomore Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) clocking in with a time of 15:14.40. Freshman Jonathan Ellis (Baltimore, Md./Towson HS) was close behind in 15:17.68.

At the Aquinas College Little Meet, Calvin swept the top three spots in a pair of events. In the 800 meters, senior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took first in a time of 1:59.41 with junior James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) second (1:59.46) and junior Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) third (2:01.57).

Calvin took the top three spots in the 60 meter hurdles as well with senior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) winning in a time of 8.81 while junior Alex Williams (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) was second (8.92) and sophomore David Byl (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (8.93).

The Knights placed three in the top four of the pole vault with senior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) taking second (14-3 1/4), senior Devin Schweigert (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) placing third (13-9 1/4) and sophomore Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) taking fourth (13-3 1/2).

Junior Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) was second in the long jump (21-10) and triple jump (41-7 3/4) while placing fourth in the 60 meter dash (7.38).

Junior Brendan VanHouten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was second in the shot put (45-5) and weight throw (48-1 1/4).

Calvin took three of the top four spots in the 400 meter dash with junior Josh VanDyk (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) second (53.66), junior Marcus James (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) third (54.03) and freshman Matthew Blanker (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) fourth (54.32).

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of James, Jeninga, Blanker and senior Hendrik Vermeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School( was second in a time of 3:36.49.

WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's indoor track and field team had a busy Friday evening, competing at the Aquinas College Little Meet and the Grand Valley State Big Meet.

At Grand Valley, Calvin's distance runners ran well. In the 5,000 meters, sophomore Michaelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) clocked in a career-best time of 17:48.22. Junior Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) had a time of 18:40.80 with freshman Taylor Ten Pas (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) recording a time of 19:03.86 and junior Lindsey Fox (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) coming in at 19:40.22.

In the 3,000 meter run, junior Katie Diekema (Kenmore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) had a season-best time of 10:06.06.

At the Aquinas College Little Meet, the Knights were paced by junior Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) who won the triple jump with a leap of 33-9 1/2 while also placing fourth in the 200 meters (27.93).

In the 400 meters, senior Maggie LaLonde (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven HS) was second (1:06.29). Senior Hattie Greydanus (Corvallis, Or./Corvallis HS) was third in the 800 meters (2:26.73).

In the 60 meter dash, sophomore Jackie Amissah-Nunoo (Accra, Ghana/Akosombo International School) was third in a time of 8.34.

Freshman Tessa Van De Walker (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was third in the 3,000 meter run (11:53.63).

Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Greydanus, LaLonde, freshman Madison Brink (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and junior Alyssa Wolters (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS) was second in a time of 4:37.25.

In the high jump, senior Kayla Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was second (5-1). She also placed second in the pole vault (10-2 3/4). Sophomore Allison Rozell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Forest Hills Northern HS) added a third place finish in the long jump.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association has named its 2017 All-Academic team and individual recipients in men's cross country and the Calvin men's cross country team has received accolades on both counts.
Led by head coach Brian Diemer, the Calvin men's team posted a team cumulative grade point average this past fall of 3.51. In order to receive the award, teams must post a minimum team GPA of 3.10.
Individually, Calvin had four members of its men's team receive honors. Those four individuals include seniors Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS), Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, IL/John Hersey HS) and Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and sophomore Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS).
Individuals needed to have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 25 percent at their respective NCAA III Regional Championships.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
