CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR JANUARY 30, 2018
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
For the first time in her collegiate career, Calvin College sophomore Libby Engle has been named the MIAA Women's Swimmer of the Week.
A native of Troy, Michigan, Engle played a key role in Calvin's 154-88 dual meet victory at Kalamazoo this past Saturday.
A graduate of Troy High School, Engle won the 200 freestyle in Saturday's competition with a time of 2:00.24.
She also anchored Calvin's winning 400 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay teams. In the 400 medley relay, she completed the anchor leg with a time of 55.68. In the 200 freestyle relay, she swam the final 50 freestyle leg in a time of 25.47.
"Libby had a fantastic meet on Saturday and I am extremely pleased to see her receive this award," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "It was exciting to see her bring home the victory in both relays and she had an excellent swim in the 200 freestyle. She has been a key part of our team success and I know her teammates are very excited to see her receive this honor."
Ranked 13th nationally, Calvin will host rival Hope on Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.
WOMEN'S DIVING
For the fourth time this year and for the fifth time in her collegiate career, Calvin College senior Sarah Bradley has been named the MIAA Women's Diver of the Week.
Bradley shares the award this week with Kalamazoo's Madeline Woods.
Bradley hails from Wheaton, Illinois. She is a graduate of Wheaton North High School.
In a dual meet at Kalamazoo on Wednesday, Bradley won the one-meter diving competition with a score of 272.65. She also placed second on the three-meter board with a score of 242.70.
Her set of performances helped lead Calvin to a 154-88 victory over the Hornets.
"Sarah had another strong and steady afternoon," said Calvin diving coach Aaron Paskvan. "She has worked hard on her craft throughout the season and her consistency continues to show. I am very happy to see her receive this award."

MEN'S SWIMMING
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the third time this season, Julian Iturbe has claimed the MIAA Swimmer of the Week title in men's swimming & diving. Iturbe and the Knights defeated Kalamazoo on Saturday, 131-106.
A freshman from Caracas, Venezuela, Iturbe won three events on Saturday.
Iturbe was victorious in the 200-yard individual medley at 2:00.14.
He also took the 100-yard freestyle crown on Saturday with a time of 48.54.
He was also a member of the 400-yard medley relay that won with a time of 3:35.67.
Iturbe and the Knights return to action on Saturday on senior day against Hope.
MORE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin men's and women's swimming and diving teams have not only produced in the pool but also in the classroom. Both teams were recently named to the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America honor roll for the 2017 fall semester.
The Team Scholar All American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester/term and in the semester/term of the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships (Winter/Spring).
Under the direction of head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Calvin women's team posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.49 for the fall semester while the Calvin men's team posted a cumulative team grade point average of 3.30.
"I am very proud of our teams for accomplishing this goal," said Gelderloos. "One of the goals before the year begins is to earn this award. We stress hard work and excellence not only in the pool but in the classroom. It is gratifying to see our student-athletes recognized for their efforts."
