Swimming and Diving Teams Wrap Up Record-Breaking Weekend at Calvin Invite
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 17 ranked Calvin women's swimming & diving team finished the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational in third place with 1334 points. The Knights defeated teams from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA. The Knights finished the day with one school record.
"I am kind of mind blown," said head coach Dan Gelderloos. "I am somewhat speechless; I am just in utter awe of what the team was able to do. It was fun to sit back and watch this unfold. To see their hard work come to fruition. We did some absolutely phenomenal things this weekend."
The Knights started the day with a third-place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of junior Madelyn Smith (Allegan, Mich./Allegan), junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney), senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) clocked in at 3:29.52.
The evening session started with a fifth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Daniella Sugijanto (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate), freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington), freshman Jenna Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and Abby Van Harn finished at 1:46.68, the fastest NCAA Division III team at the meet.
Anna Serino was fastest Knight in the 500-yard freestyle at 5:11.99. She dropped 1.98 seconds from her prelim time. Serino finished with the fastest time in the B-Final to take ninth place.
On the 3-meter boards, senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) won her second event of the weekend at 434.65 points.
"We had a very good weekend," said head diving coach Aaron Paskvan. "We had some very good performances. Sarah put up some good dives. Joselyn got her first cut for regionals, which was a good step in the right direction. The others had some new dives, they did well, but we have to work on our consistency. The freshman class keeps learning every day."
Hannah Chao touched the wall at 2:07.10 in the 200-yard backstroke in fourth place. Her prelim time of 2:06.66 was the fourth-fastest time in program history. She also finished the 200-yard individual medley in fourth place at 2:10.06.
Jenna Oezer led the Knights in the 100-yard butterfly on Saturday. She checked in at 58.54, to take 11th place. Her time was the fifth-fastest time in school history. Sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) recorded the sixth-fastest time in school history at 58.69.
In 15th place in the 200-yard breaststroke was freshman Kelly Makela (Boise, Idaho/Boise) at 2:38.32.
Abby Van Harn was the second swimmer to touch the wall in the 100-yard freestyle at 50.68.
"I am really proud of the team," said Van Harn. "I underestimated how much depth we have and how fast we would be swimming at this time of year. I was so pumped to see that the freshman and really everyone doing so well."
The Knights closed the weekend in record-breaking fashion in the 200-yard freestyle relay time trial. The team of Emily Gunderson, Rachel Mattson, Madelyn Smith and Abby Van Harn broke the school record and recorded a NCAA B-Cut time at 1:33.84.
The Knights will travel to Trinidad at the end of the month.
"I cannot wait to travel with the team," said coach Gelderloos. "It is going to be a great and new experience for us. We hope that it will be one that will be memorable for the student-athletes and enhance their experience here at Calvin."
The Maroon and Gold will return to action on Jan. 13 at Albion.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Knights finished the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational in third place with 1180.5 points. The Knights defeated teams from NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and the NAIA.

The Knights started the evening with a record-tying performance in the 200-yard medley relay. The team of junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant), senior Tanner Vincent (Novi, Mich./Novi), junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason) and junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Iowa/Pella Christian) swam a time of 1:30.06. Grand Valley won the race with a pool-record time of 1:28.34.
In the morning session, the Knights finished in third place in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ben Holstege, freshman Julian Iturbe (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman), senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern) and Jared Britton clocked in at 3:01.89.
Freshman Julian Iturbe touched the wall at 4:36.44 in the 500-yard freestyle in sixth place. His time was the fourth-fastest time in school history.
In the 200-yard backstroke, freshman Colin Murphy (Troy, Mich./Brother Rice) was the fastest Knight at 1:59.67 in 12th place.
Jared Briton finished the 100-yard butterfly in fourth place at 49.80.
Sophomore Nick Pecoraro (Chicago, Ill./Nazareth Academy) dropped over three seconds in the 200-yard breaststroke finals on Saturday to finish in 14th place at 2:16.98.
Max DeYoung placed 16th in the 100-yard freestyle at 48.26.
Senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) finished in seventh place on the 1-meter boards.
"We had a very good weekend," said head diving coach Aaron Paskvan. "We had some very good performances. Mike put up some good dives. Overall, we had some new dives, they did well, but we have to work on our consistency."
Tanner Vincent was the fastest Calvin swimmer in the 200-yard individual medley at 1:53.67. His time is the fourth-fastest time in program history.
"I am really proud of what the team has done," said Vincent. "We came into the year unsure of our chances, this year, losing a handful of seniors. I think this weekend showed that we are not to be trifled with."
The Knights shined in the 200-yard freestyle relay time trial. The team of Ben Holstege, Jacob Lensing, Max DeYoung and Jared Britton recorded a NCAA B-Cut time of 1:22.18.
The Knights will travel to Trinidad at the end of the month.
