Calvin Men's and Women's Soccer Players Receive United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Central Region Honors

MEN'S SOCCER

Five members of the Calvin men's soccer team have received Division III United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region honors.

Senior Nate Van Ryn and juniors Trent Vegter and Bobby McCaw have been named to the All-Central Region first team while senior Matt Hinds and sophomore Hunter Olson have been named to the second team.

As members of the first team, Van Ryn, Vegter and McCaw are all eligible for United Soccer Coaches Division III All-America consideration.

A native of Grandville and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Van Ryn is receiving Division III All-Central Region honors for the first time. A two-year starter in goal, Van Ryn put together a superlative 2017 campaign, posting a 21-1-1 record in goal that included 15 shutout victories and a goals-against-average of 0.43. His season shutout total is the second-highest and his goals-against-average the third-best in Calvin men's soccer single-season history.

A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter is receiving Division III All-Central Region first team honors for the second straight year. A three-year starter at centerback, Vegter played a key role in Calvin posting 15 shutout victories this fall and allowing only 10 goals on the season. He also played an integral role in Calvin's offensive attack with his consistent long serves into the attacking third while also providing scoring punch himself. Vegter with four goals, 10 assists and 18 points. He scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win at Kalamazoo on October 21. During the season he was named a two-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week. He was later named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player and landed a spot on the All-MIAA first team for the third straight year.
McCaw hails from Dubuque, Iowa. He is a graduate of Hempstead High School. A center forward, McCaw was Calvin's scoring leader this fall with 21 goals, six assists and 48 points. His goal total matched the fifth-highest in Calvin men's soccer history in a season while his point total matched the seventh-highest single-season total. A three-time MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, McCaw tallied six game-winning goals over the course of the 2017 campaign. He was later named to the All-MIAA first team.

Hinds hails from Frankenmuth. He is also a graduate of Frankenmuth High School. A left back on defense, Hinds played a key role in helping Calvin post 15 shutouts this season and an overall team goals-against-average of 0.43. On offense, Hinds was the primary striker of free kicks and also contributed to several of Calvin's corner kick tries. Hinds proved to be a valuable offensive asset, registering five goals and a team-leading 13 assists. His assist total matched the fifth-highest single-season total in Calvin men's soccer history. Hinds scored three game-winning goals during the season including the game-winner in a 2-0 victory over John Carroll University in the second round of the 2017 NCAA III Tournament. Hinds was named to the 2017 All-MIAA first team. He was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week once.

Olson is from Canton, Michigan. He is a graduate of Canton High School. A box-to-box midfielder, Olson finished second on the Calvin men's soccer team team in scoring this fall with 14 goals, 11 assists and 39 points. Olson scored three game-winning goals during the season. Olson was named to the 2017 All-MIAA first team. He was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once.
"I'm extremely proud of all five of our players named to the all-region teams," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "They have all worked hard in contributing to our team's success. Most of all, this collection of awards is a strong reflection on our team as a whole. Every member of our team works together and each member of our team shares in these awards."

Calvin recently completed another standout season, winning its 11th consecutive MIAA regular season title as well as its fourth straight MIAA Tournament crown. The Knights finished 21-1-1 overall, reaching the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament for the third consecutive year while also hitting the 20-win plateau for the third consecutive season.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Two members of the Calvin women's soccer team have received Division III United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region honors.

Senior Camie Rietberg has been named to the United Soccer Coaches Division III All-Central Region second team while freshman Abby Koops has been named to the third team.

Rietberg and Koops are both receiving United Soccer Coaches All-Central Region honors for the first time.

A native of Wyoming and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Rietberg put together a standout senior campaign in midfield, scoring seven goals and registering 14 points. Four of her seven goals proved to be game-winners this fall.
The final goal of her Calvin career was a notable one as it came late in the second half and proved to be the game-winner in a 1-0 win at Albion on October 24. Rietberg was also named to the All-MIAA first team this fall.

Koops is from Saugatuck and a graduate of Holland Christian High School. Also a midfielder, Koops had an immediate impact as a freshman, scoring seven goals, collecting three assists and posting 17 points as she led the Knights in scoring this fall.

Koops tallied a pair of game-winning goals this fall, scoring the winner in a 2-1 win over Milwaukee School of Engineering on September 2 late in the second half and then scoring the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win over Adrian on September 26.

Koops was also named to the All-MIAA second team this fall.

"It's always special to have individual performances of members of our team recognized and then honored by Division III coaches who they have competed against," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. ""Both Camie and Abby love the game and it is visible to others in the way they play. I am pleased and happy for them. It is also a reflection on their team and what their team teammates helped them to achieve."
The Calvin women's soccer team finished 12-9-0 overall this past year and reached the MIAA Tournament semifinals for the second straight year.
