Volleyball Claims Share of MIAA Regular Season Crown;
Swimming and Diving Teams Open Dual Meet Campaigns

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - On Friday evening, the No. 4 ranked Calvin volleyball team hit the road to face the Hornets of Kalamazoo College. The Knights left Kalamazoo with a 25-11, 25-17, 25-18 victory. With this victory, the Knights clinch a share of the MIAA regular season crown. Calvin has won at least a share of the last seven MIAA regular season titles. Calvin leads the MIAA with 24 titles. The Knights enter the final week of the regular season riding a 13-match win streak with a record of 21-3 and at 13-0 in the MIAA. Kalamazoo falls to 5-16 and 2-10 in MIAA action.
"I was really pleased with our play tonight," said head coach Amber Warners. "It is a great honor for the team to earn a share of the MIAA title. This group has worked very hard this season, and they are deserving of this honor. With that being said, we still have a lot of things we want to accomplish, but this is a key step."
The Knights started the match with a service ace from senior Kristen Vyletel (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron). Calvin would start on a 5-1 run with a pair of kills from sophomore Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian). Leading 8-5, Calvin would push the lead up to 12-5 behind the serve of junior Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian). After Kalamazoo cut the Calvin lead to 12-7, senior Tessa Van Laare (Toronto, Ont./Toronto District Christian) stung the Hornets with a pair of kills. The Knights closed the set on a 10-3 run, highlighted by three-straight service aces from senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian). After a pair of Kalamazoo points, Anna Kamp ended the set at 25-11 with a cross-court kill. The Knights held the Hornets to a hitting percentage of -.115 in the first set.
The Maroon and Gold opened the second set on a 3-0 run and the run was ended when Anna Kamp sent the ball sailing to the exit and onto Academy Street. After the Hornets cut the lead to 6-5, Calvin rallied to push the lead back up to 11-5. Anna Kamp had four kills in the beginning of the set. The Knights went on a 4-0 run to push the lead to 19-8. Sophomore Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) scored the 20th point of the set for Calvin with a line drive that fell in front of the Kalamazoo defender. The Hornets would not fold and went on a 4-0 run to cut the Calvin lead to 20-14. A tip kill from freshman Sydney Segard (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) snapped the Kalamazoo run. Junior Rachel Herrera (Schererville, Ind./Illiana Christian) dug up the final ball second set to senior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian), who cleanly sent the ball to Sarah DeVries to end the set at 25-17.
The Knights jumped on the Hornets early in the third set at 7-1. The Knights kept their foot of the acceleration and pushed the lead up to 12-3. The Hornets pushed back in the third set and cut the Calvin lead to 16-11. A kill from Sydney Segard snapped the skid. The Knights elevated the lead to 24-15 before the Hornets would take the next three points. A tip kill from junior Jamie Petrarca (St. John, Ind./Illiana Christian) ended the set at 25-18.
The Calvin defense was strong on Friday and picked up on the Kalamazoo attack. Emily Blankespoor, Rachel Herrera, senior Megan Van Solkema (Escondido, Calif./Escondido Calvin Christian), junior Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville), Kristen Vyletel, Jenna Lodewyk, Anna Kamp and Sarah DeVries all recorded a dig on Friday.
Anna Kamp and Sarah DeVries both finished with a match-high 13 kills, DeVries hit .571 and had four blocks on Friday. Jenna Lodewyk tallied 34 assists and Keilahna Castillo recorded a match-high 14 digs.
Calvin has won 55-straight MIAA regular season matches and 34-straight road matches.
The Knights will take the weekend off and return to action on Tuesday at Van Noord Arena against Hope. The Knights can clinch the MIAA regular season outright against Hope.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Calvin 148, Hillsdale 86
Grand Valley State 159, Calvin 82
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The women's swimming and diving team split a pair of dual meets Friday night against Division II competition. The Knights defeated Hillsdale 148-86 but fell to Grand Valley State 159-82 in the 2017-18 dual meet opener for Calvin at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Ranked 24th in the first Division III College Swim Coaches Association of America Top 25 poll, Calvin had a slew of sterling performances Friday night.
Junior Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney HS) won the 200 freestyle in 1:56.12 and placed fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:17.86). Her time in the 200 freestyle is currently the sixth-best in NCAA III women's swimming this season.
Senior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was also terrific, winning the 100 freestyle in a time of 53.89 and taking second in the 50 freestyle in 24.76. Her time in the 100 freestyle is the 11th-best in Division III women's swimming this season while her time in the 50 freestyle ranks 12th.
Junior Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) provided a strong fourth place swim in the 50 freestyle in a time of 25.46 while junior Kendall Murphy (Modesto, Ca./Home Schooled) was fifth in the 500 free (5:25.05) and fourth in the 1000 free (10:59.50).
In the diving competition, senior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton North HS) was second on the three-meter board (232.85) and third on the one-meter board (194.10). Freshman Joselyn Smith (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) was second on the one-meter board (195.15) and third on the three-meter board (201.55). Freshman Hannabeth Magussen (Oakdale, Ca./Ripon Christian HS) was fourth on the three-meter board (175.75) and freshman Stephany Morrow (Eagle Lake, Mn./Mankato East HS) fifth (145.75).
Freshman Hannah Chao (Farmington Hills, Mich./North Farmington HS) had a strong collegiate dual meet debut, taking fourth in the 200 IM (2:16.78) and in the 100 backstroke (1:00.81).
In the 100 breaststroke junior Elysa Wolf (Austin, Tx./Regents School of Austin HS) was fourth (1:14.79).
In the 200 freestyle relay, Chao, sophomore Emily Gunderson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS), Serino and Van Harn placed second in 1:40.20 which currently ranks seventh nationally. Calvin's 200 medley relay of sophomore Abbey Wellman (Crown Point, Ind./Crown Point HS), Wolf, Gunderson and senior Rachel Mattson (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) was third in 1:53.58.
"I was very pleased with the results tonight," said Calvin head swim coach Dan Gelderloos. "We had some athletes really get off to a good start. It was good to get our first competition in and now it's time to move forward."
Calvin will host the MIAA Relays next Friday at Venema Aquatic Center with the meet starting at 6 p.m.
MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
Grand Valley State 177, Calvin 58
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's swimming and diving team opened its 2017-18 dual meet season on Friday by falling to Division II Grand Valley State 177-58 at the Venema Aquatic Center.
Despite the loss, Calvin had several standout performances.
Freshman Julian Iturbu (Caracas, Venezuela/Colegio Emil Friedman HS) had a strong home debut, taking second in the 200 freestyle (1:44.93) and third in the 500 freestyle (4:55.58).
In the diving competition, senior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Oh./Solon HS) took second on the three-meter board (237.15) and third on the one-meter board (232.05).
The Knights went 2-3-4 in the 100 breaststroke with sophomore Fear Churchwell (Athens, Ga./Clarke Central HS) taking second (1:00.93), junior Jacob Lensing (Pella, Ia./Pella Christian HS) placing third (1:01.37) and sophomore Sam Holstege (Kewswick, Va/Covenant Christian HS) taking fourth (1:03.39).
In the 100 backstroke, junior Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant Christian HS) was second (51.37) and junior Skyler Fish (Ionia, Mich./Ionia HS) fourh (54.04).
Senior Max DeYoung (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) was third in the 100 freestyle (48.30) while Churchwell was third in the 200 IM (2:00.84).
Junior Jared Britton (Falls Church, Va./George Mason HS) was fourth in the 50 freestyle (22.13) and sophomore Brian Goins (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) fourth in the 1000 freestyle (10:15.28).
In the 100 butterfly, freshman Lucas Holcombe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) was fourth (55.04) and junior Nathan Olberding (Noblesville, Ind./Noblesville HS) fifth (55.08).
Calvin's 200 medley relay team of Ben Holstege, Lensing, Holcombe and Britton took second in a time of 1:35.79 which ranks 10th nationally. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay team of Olberding, sophomore Tristan Hazlett (Lutz, Fla./Home Schooled), DeYoung and Iturbue placed second in 1:27.33. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay time ranks eighth nationally this season.
