Women's Soccer Falls to Hope

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - For the second straight meeting, Calvin fought Hope on even terms for one half of play but could not remain level in the second half.

The MIAA-leading Flying Dutch (13-1-1 overall, 11-1-1 MIAA) scored a pair of second half goals to defeat the Knights Tuesday evening at Zuidema Field.

In the first meeting of the year between the two teams in mid-September at Hope's Van Andel Stadium, Calvin played Hope to a 0-0 draw at halftime but the Flying Dutch exploded for four second half goals.
On Wednesday night, Calvin held Hope in tighter check but could not keep the Flying Dutch from pulling away in the second half.

Hope outshot Calvin 11-2 in the first half but the Knight defense held firm for the first 45 minutes.

Calvin (10-6-0 overall, 7-5-0 MIAA) came out with energy early in the second half and began to press the attack.

The Flying Dutch responded with a quick counterattack strike however as Rylie Dalton sent Grace Bubin free through the Calvin back line with a well-timed lead pass. In free on the goal, Bubin was able to chip a shot over Calvin goalkeeper Amy Kliewer in the 59th minute to give Hope a 1-0 lead.

Calvin pressed back for the equalizer but could not slip through the Hope defensive wall.
Hope sealed the win in the 88th minute as Allie Wittenbach stole a loose ball in the Calvin defensive third and fired a shot into the net for her fifth goal of the season.
Hope held a 24-7 shots at goal advantage. Kliewer had six saves for Calvin while Jordanne Ellingboe had two saves in goal for Hope.
"I think that our team came to the field and gave superb effort," said Calvin women's soccer coach Mark Recker. "We are still working with young players on the field and they are finding their way on what it will take to be champions in the future. Does it feel good or taste good when you suffer a loss like tonight? No it does not but but it's easier to walk off the field when you know you have given the kind of effort we gave tonight. Hope has a very good team and I congratulate them on the victory but I was proud of the effort my team gave tonight."
Calvin is now in fifth place in the MIAA standings with 21 points, two points behind Adrian.
Calvin will host Trine Saturday night at 7 p.m. on Senior Night at Zuidema Field.
