Calvin Fall Sports Athletes Named MIAA Players of the Week

VOLLEYBALL

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Coming off a 5-0 week, the Calvin volleyball team swept the MIAA volleyball weekly honors. Tessa Van Laare was named the MIAA Player of the Week and Jenna Lodewyk claimed the Specialty Player of the Week honor.
"I am very proud of these two ladies," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "They both had incredible weeks and helped the team win some very difficult matches."
A senior from Toronto, Ontario, Van Laare is receiving this honor for the first time in her career.
On Wednesday, Van Laare hit .563 at Saint Mary's and finished with nine kills.
At the Midwest Invitational, she recorded a season-high 13 kills to lead the Knights against Ithaca. She also notched nine kills against Kean and finished with nine kills against No. 14 Millikin. Van Laare posted a .304 hitting percentage on the weekend.
"This is a great honor of Tessa," said Warners. "She is an incredible player who has been extremely unselfish in her role on the team and sometimes doesn't get the recognition that she deserves. She had a fantastic week against some really good competition."
She finished the week with 48 kills, eight digs and three blocks.
A senior from Villa Park, Illinois, Lodewyk is being named the Specialty Player of the Week for the second-straight week and third time in 2017 and the eighth time in her career.
Lodewyk was named to the Midwest Invitational All-Tournament Team. She led the tournament with a hitting percentage of .360.
"Jenna keeps improving and is showing to be a player this is very offensive as well as defensive," said Warners. "Teams have to give her respect as an attacker which creates better opportunities for our hitters."
After recording her 4000th assist two weeks ago, she finished the week with 164 assists and nine service aces, 50 digs, and 11 blocks.
Lodewyk posted a hitting percentage of .500 against Saint Mary's and Kean. In the Kean match, Lodewyk finished with eight kills.
At Saint Mary's, she finished with a career-high five blocks, including one solo block.
Lodewyk posted three double-doubles with 41 assists and 10 digs against No. 14 Millikin, 31 assists and 10 digs against Elmhurst, and a season high 15 digs and 35 assists against Ithaca.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday against Alma.

MEN'S SOCCER

Calvin College freshman midfielder Shaeffer Smith has been named the MIAA Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week.

A native of Columbus, Ohio, Smith scored three goals in Saturday's 5-1 win at Adrian College. The hat-trick performance was the first of Smith's collegiate career.

Smith has four goals and two assists on the season.
"Shaeffer had an excellent performance Saturday night but he would be the first one to tell you that this is a team award," said Calvin men's soccer coach Ryan Souders. "I thought we moved the ball well and played with energy against Adrian and Shaeffer was a big part of that. He continues to improve and gain confidence."

Calvin went 1-0-1 last week, tying Hope 1-1 on the road Wednesday night and then downing Adrian Saturday evening.

The Knights are 13-0-1 overall and on top of the MIAA standings with a 9-0-1 conference mark.

Calvin will host Alma Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field.
