CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR SEPT. 18, 2017
For the second time this year and for the fourth time in his career, Calvin College junior Bobby McCaw has been named the MIAA's Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer.
McCaw (Dubuqe, Ia./Hempstead HS) scored three goals and picked up an assist last week as the second-ranked Knights defeated Trine 3-0 and rival Hope 2-0.
A forward, McCaw scored a goal and assisted on another in the win over Trine and then notched a brace in Calvin's 2-0 win over Hope Saturday night in front of nearly 2,000 fans at Calvin's Zuidema Field.
In conference games he is the early MIAA leader in goals (3) and points (7). On the season overall, McCaw has five goals, three assists and 13 points.
The Calvin men's soccer team is currently 6-0-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAA. The Knights will host Adrian Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field in an early-season showdown for first place in the MIAA standings. The Bulldogs are also 2-0-0 in league play.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Leah Newhof claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) women's tennis Player of the Week honors on Monday for matches through Sept. 17. Newhof is the first Player of the Week for the MIAA this season and it is the first time in her career that she claimed this honor.
"Leah had a very nice opening weekend of tennis at the Hope Invite," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "She had a couple of solid singles victories. I thought that Leah and Maddie really progressed in doubles this weekend as well. Our goal is to keep building on this weekend and keep growing in our consistency as a team."
A freshman from Caledonia, Michigan, Newhof competed in the Hope Invitational this past weekend. She posted a 2-2 record in singles play, with victories over Bailey Sagen of Wisconsin-Oshkosh and Alexa Sweeney of Grand Valley State.
With freshman Madeline Brouwer, Newhof recorded a record of 2-1 in doubles play.
Newhof and the Knights return to action on Friday for the ITA Central Regional in Oberlin, Ohio.
MEN'S TENNIS
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán claimed Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) men's tennis Player of the Week honors on Monday for matches through Sept. 17. Guzmán is the first Player of the Week for the MIAA this season and it is the first time in his career that he claimed this honor.
"I am very happy for Rodrigo," said head coach John Ross. "He did a good job at Hope this past weekend. We are really excited for this upcoming season."
A sophomore from Tarija, Bolivia, Guzmán competed in the Hope Invitational this past weekend. He posted a 2-1 record in singles play, with victories over Andrew Klein of Hope and Ryan Fedewa of Aquinas.
With senior David Brown, he defeated Danny Kroeze and Carter Smiley of Hope, 9-7.
Guzmán and the Knights return to action in two weeks for the ITA Central Regional in Kalamazoo, Michigan.
