MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Trine 0
ANGOLA, Ind. - The Calvin men's soccer team opened its 2017 MIAA campaign with a 3-0 win at Trine University Wednesday afternoon.
The win was a significant one as it marked the 100th collegiate victory for Calvin men's head soccer coach Ryan Souders. In six years at the helm of the Knights, Souders is now 100-15-6 for a winning percentage of .843.
Ranked second in the United Soccer Coaches' Poll and number-one in the latest D3soccer.com Top 25 poll, Calvin took a 2-0 lead into halftime.
Senior Matt Hinds (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS) put the Knights (5-0-0 overall, 1-0-0 MIAA) up 1-0 with a goal in the 26th minute on a pass from junior Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS).
Junior Lucas Albrecht (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian HS) then broke loose for his second goal in three games, scoring with just 54 seconds left in the first half on a pass from freshman Jack Lee (Frankenmuth, Mich./Frankenmuth HS).
McCaw completed the scoring by belting in his third goal of the year on a feed from junior Trent Vegter (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) in the 65th minute.
Calvin outshot Trine 28-3 and had 10 corner kicks in the match. Calvin senior goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was credited with his third clean sheet of the year. Trine (2-1-1 overall, 0-1-0 MIAA) was led by goalkeeper Quinn O'Brien who posted 14 saves in 90 minutes of action.
"It was great to get a road win to start the MIAA," said Souders. "I don't think we played a particularly great first half but give Trine credit. They took away from us what we wanted to do. We'll need to refocus and get ready for a battle Saturday night."
Calvin will host rival Hope Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Zuidema Field. The game will mark the first game under the new Zuidema Field lights for the Calvin men's soccer program.
VOLLEYBALL
ALMA, Mich. - The No. 1 ranked Calvin volleyball team remained perfect on Wednesday with a 3-0 victory at Alma on Wednesday night. The Knights sank the Scots, 25-8, 26-24, 25-16. The Maroon and Gold move to 8-0 on the season and 4-0 in the MIAA. Alma is now 3-4 and 1-2 in the MIAA. The victory keeps the Knights in first place in the MIAA with No. 18 Hope.
"I am really pleased with how we started today," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "It is never easy to win on the road, especially in the MIAA. We now have to focus on the weekend and three really good teams."
The Knights wasted no time getting started on Wednesday. Calvin jumped out to an early 14-3 lead and never looked back. Calvin cruised to a 25-8 victory in set one. The Scots would cut the Calvin lead to 5-4, but the serve of Anna Kamp ended the Scots' run and pushed the lead to 8-4. Alma would chip away at the Calvin lead and take the lead at 12-11. The two teams would exchange the lead a handful of times until the end of the set. Tied at 24, Anna Kamp closed the set with a cross-court kill and a service ace, to take the set 26-24.
Trailing 2-1, the Knights would ride the serve of senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) to take a 6-2 lead. The Scots would cut the Calvin lead to four points, but would not be able to get any closer the rest of the night. The Knights would push the lead to 10 points on two occasions and won the set at 25-16.
The Knights are riding three major streaks. Calvin has won 48-straight MIAA matches, 41-straight regular season matches and 29-staight road matches.
