SAN ANTONIO, TX - SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The No. 1 ranked Calvin volleyball team shined bright deep in the heart of Texas, this weekend. The Knights capped off an undefeated weekend with a 3-2 victory over the No. 6 Regals of California Lutheran and a 3-0 victory over Whitman. Calvin won the Trinity Invitational with a 4-0 record and picked up three victories over ranked teams. Junior Anna Kamp and senior Jenna Lodewyk were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Kamp claiming MVP honors.
"I am very happy with the results from today," said head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "We had some moments today where we had to show some resiliency when things weren't going the way we liked and they all stayed bought in worked through it. We are a better team today than we were yesterday."
The Knights started off the day in a battle of Division III heavyweights, with California Lutheran. With the first set tied at five, Calvin would string off the next four points, behind the serve of senior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian). The Regals would respond with a 10-2 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Knights would show some grit and won six of the next seven points. CLU would push the lead up to 21-17, before Calvin would chip the lead away to 24-23. Sophomore Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) tied the match with her third kill all-time at Calvin. An Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) kill gave the Knights the lead and a CLU attack error gave the Knights a 26-24 victory.
The Maroon and Gold slammed the foot on the acceleration pedal in set two, taking an early 9-2 lead. Leading 10-5, Calvin slammed the door shut with a 10-1 run and won the set, 25-13. The Knights had a .385 hitting percentage in the second set.
The Regals would respond with a 9-4 run to start the third set. Calvin would chip the lead away and tie the set at 15. Tied at 18, Cal Lu won the next three points and held onto the lead to win 25-22.
The serving of Keilahna Castillo gave the Regals problems in set four and pushed Calvin to a 6-0 lead. Cal Lu would not fold and would cut the Calvin lead to 10-9. Behind the serve of senior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian), Calvin would win the next five points. The Regals closed the set on an 11-4 run, to force a fifth set. Anna Kamp and Sarah DeVries both had five kills in the fourth set.
Trailing, 1-2, Calvin went on a 4-0 run with two service aces from Keilahna Castillo. After two CLU points, Calvin pushed the lead to 8-4. The Maroon and Gold closed the match on a 6-2 run to put away the Regals.
Anna Kamp and sophomore Ally Fea (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Mechanicsburg) both finished with career-high kills on Saturday, Kamp roped in 19 kills and Fea finished with 11. Freshman Sydney Segard (Hudsonville, Mich./Hudsonville) recorded her first career kill at Calvin against the Regals. Sophomore Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) had a career-high six blocks and recorded a season-high 13 kills. Keilahna Castillo led all players with five service aces and 17 digs.
The Knights closed the Texas trip with a 3-0 victory over Whitman.
The first set was all Calvin. The Knights rode the serve of Keilahna Castillo to an early 9-0 lead. Calvin pushed the lead to 15 points at 19-4. Calvin closed the set on a 3-0 run to win 25-11.
Set two was tight until the very end. Trailing 10-11, the Knights would go on a 7-0 run with the help of the serve of Emily Blankespoor. Whitman would cut the Calvin lead to 24-22, but Anna Kamp put the set away with a kill.
Whitman started the third set with a 4-1 run. Calvin responded with a 10-2 run and would not look back. The Knights would finish the weekend taking the third set 25-19.
Anna Kamp finished the match with 16 kills. Jenna Lodewyk had a .571 hitting percentage and 26 assists. Emily Blankespoor led the Knights with 10 digs and three service aces.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday when they open MIAA play at home against Olivet.
MEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 3, Lake Forest 0
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 2 ranked Calvin men's soccer team closed out competition at the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament with a 3-0 victory over Lake Forest College Saturday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
With the win, Calvin captured the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament title for the second straight year and for the seventh time in school history. The Knights finished as the only team in the four-team tournament to finish 2-0-0 with Ohio Wesleyan and Hope both finishing 1-1-0 and Lake Forest 0-2-0.
With seven tournament titles to its credit, Calvin matches Hope for most titles won in the tournament that began in 2001.
Calvin (2-0-0) took a 2-0 halftime lead using a pair of goals just 21 seconds apart. Junior Jacob Witte (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) put the Knights on the board on a run through the left side of the box after receiving a lead pass from sophomore Jacob Lyon (Holt, Mich./Lansing Christian HS). Witte beat Lake Forest goalkeeper Jan Roessler with a burst and slid a shot inside the far post in the 31st minute of play.
Just 21 seconds later, Calvin pressed again and was rewarded when junior Bobby McCaw (Dubuque, Ia./Hempstead HS) was taken down in the box and was awarded with a penalty kick. McCaw made good on the penalty to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.
Calvin capped off the victory with a goal by sophomore Hunter Olsen (Canton, Mich./Canton HS) with 3:12 left in regulation. The goal was ignited by a quick one-two passing combination between McCaw and Witte with both players drawing an assist on the play.
Calvin outshot Lake Forest (0-2-0) 22-8 and held a 10-2 edge in corner kicks. Senior Nate Van Ryn (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) had five saves for Calvin in posting his first clean sheet of the year.
"We feel great. It was a good team performance and that is what we were looking for today - ending the weekend on a strong note," said Calvin assistant coach Taylor Clarke. "We preach patience and confidence on offense and I thought our guys did a great job of staying patient and believing that the scoring chances would come. Getting a shutout was also huge. It was a complete group effort and it helps build confidence as a team."
Calvin will now prepare to travel to Ohio next weekend as it will journey to Case Western Reserve next Friday and to Oberlin College on Saturday for a set of non-conference games.
WOMEN'S SOCCER
Calvin 2, MSOE 1
MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Calvin women's soccer team posted a perfect 2-0 record at the MSOE Invitational. The Knights completed the weekend with a 2-1 victory over MSOE in Saturday. The Maroon and Gold enter MIAA play with a 2-0-0 record. This is the first time since 2013 that the Knights have opened the season with two-straight victories.
"The team experienced two confidence building performances this weekend," said head coach Mark Recker. "In the second game, we had a lesson in perseverance and mental toughness. Growth steps are great to have and incorporate. I am very proud of them."
The Raiders tried to sneak onto the scoreboard in the fourth minute, but junior Kali Mouw (Avon, N.Y./Avon Central) stopped the ball at the far post.
Freshman Abby Koops (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) started the scoring on Saturday. Koops was able to head a bouncing ball into the back of the net in the 31st minute.
MSOE tied the game up in the 52nd minute with a game up off the foot of Aly Loepfe.
Abby Koops would strike again in the 79th minute. Sending the ball to the far post and past the Raider keeper. Freshman Jessica Paulson (Plymouth, Mich./Plymouth Christian) fed Koops the ball from a run down the far side.
"It was a really fun weekend," said Koops. "We worked really hard during preseason, so we were excited to show that off in a game. Both games were tough and physical battles. MSOE had a lot of skill and speed in all areas of the field, so we did our best to keep the ball is our possession. Every Calvin player that stepped on the field was ready to play and that made the difference for us. We were aggressive and created chances in front of the net and that's how we got our goals, through hard work."
Koops scored three of the five Calvin goals this past weekend.
The Knights would not allow another shot on goal the rest of the afternoon and would walkout 2-1 winners.
Freshman Amy Kliewer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern) improved to 2-0 on the year and posted three saves.
Calvin outshot MSOE, 15-6.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, when they open MIAA play at home against Kalamazoo.
WOMEN'S GOLF
BRISTOL, Wis. -- The Calvin women's golf team wrapped up the Battle on the Border Tournament in Wisconsin on Saturday. The Knights finished in 15th place after two days at 739 strokes. Wisconsin-Whitewater won with 649 strokes.
The Knights were led by junior Nicole VanderYacht (Kentwood, Mich./South Christian) who shot a round of 86 on Saturday, one better than Friday and finished in 24th place.
Tied for 57th place was sophomore Jessica Zylstra (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) and junior Katy Hamilton (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central), who recorded a round of 92, for the second-straight day.
Senior Gen Best (Brighton, Mich./Brighton) notched a round of 102 to finish in 85th place.
The Knights return to action on Friday at the Olivet Invite.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin men's cross country development squad competed at the Hope College Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday and placed fourth with a team score of 94 points.
Freshman Noah Cummisford (Mequon, Wisc./Homestead HS) led the Knights with a third place finish in a time of 26:38. Sophomore Jason Klaasen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) also cracked the top 10, placing eighth (27:16).
Freshman Charlie Kornoelje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was 25th (28:24), freshman Frederick McWain (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Catholic Central HS) 28th (28:44) and sophomore Jim VanDyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) 30th (29:19).
Rounding out Calvin's finshers were sophomore Ryan Van Appeldorn (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) in 31st (29:52) and freshman Noah Keene (Detroit, Mich./Henry Ford Academy) 35th (40:53).
Saturday's 5K competition was held at the Ridge Point Community Church course. Davenport took first place with a team score of 41 points.
Thomas Vanslembrouck of Davenport took first place individually with a time of 26:31.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
HOLLAND, Mich. - The Calvin women's cross country development squad competed at the Hope College Vanderbilt Invitational on Saturday and placed fourth with a team score of 100 points.
Freshman Tessa Van De Walker (Zeeland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was 12th in 20:31 followed by freshman Taylor Ten Pas (Lynden, Wash./Lynden Christian HS) in 13th (20:32).
Freshman Angeline Needs (Peru, Il./Saint Bede Academy) also cracked the top 20, placing 18th in a time of 21:08.
Rounding out Calvin's finishers were sophomore Lindy Anderson (Milan, Mich./Milan HS) in 22:24 and freshman Kelli Laube (Caledonia, Mich./Caledonia HS) in 29th (22:49).
Saturday's 5K competition was held at the Ridge Point Community Church course. Host Hope took first place with a team score of 21 points.
Emily Hamilton of Hope took first place individually with a time of 18:33.
