Colton Wolfe Signs Professional Baseball Contract;
Strohbehn and Kramer Named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans;
Swimming and Diving Programs Receive Academic Honors From CSCAA
BASEBALL
Recent Calvin College graduate Colton Wolfe has signed a professional baseball contract with White Sands Pupfish located in Alamogordo, New Mexico.
The Pupfish play in the Pecos League an independent professional baseball league.
Wolfe recently completed a record-setting career at College where he was a two-time first team All-MIAA selection as well as an All-Region honoree.
Wolfe (Eaton Rapids, Mich./Eaton Rapids HS) is the Calvin career record holder in home runs (26) and doubles (39) while ranking second on the Calvin career list in RBI (117) and at bats (520), third in hits (167) and total bases (292), fourth in runs scored (109) and fifth in base on balls (76). He also holds the Calvin single-season record for home runs with 12, set during the 2016 season.
"What a great opportunity for Colton," said Calvin baseball coach John Rypel. "This is a credit to him for all of his hard work. We look forward to following his development as a professional baseball player."
Wolfe was graduated from Calvin last month with a degree in kinesiology and sports management while holding a minor in business. As a junior, he was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY
For the second consecutive year, Calvin College senior Lauren Strohbehn has been named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Strohbehn has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America first team in the women's track and field/cross country division. A year ago, she was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team.
Strohbehn hails from Stillwater, Minnesota. She is a graduate of St. Croix Preparatory High School. Strohbehn has put together a standout career of distance running on both the Calvin cross country and track and field teams.
During the cross country season this fall, she was named to the All-MIAA first team and to the Great Lakes All-Region team. She placed 80th at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships, helping the Knights place ninth in the final team standings.
In 2015, Strohbehn was the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner for cross country and the Great Lakes Regional Athlete of the Year after taking first at the MIAA Championships and at the Great Lakes Regionals. She also took first place at the Calvin Knight Invite in mid-September and was subsequently named the Division III National Runner of the Week by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. At the NCAA III Championships, she just missed NCAA III All-America honors, placing 40th individually.
She has also had a decorated track and field career, earning NCAA III All-America honors last year in the 10,000 meters with a third place finish in the national meet. Strohbehn qualified again for the national meet in the 10K this spring and placed 17th in the event.
Earlier this spring, Strohbehn was an All-MIAA track and field honoree for the third straight year after winning the 5,000 meters at the MIAA Championships. She was later named to the USTFCCCA Division III Great Lakes All-Region Outdoor Track and Field Team.
Academically, Strohbehn majored in biology with a minor in kinesiology. She is a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List and a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll last year.
Calvin student-athletes have now received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 122 times.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD/CROSS COUNTRY
Calvin College senior Jordan Kramer has been named a CoSIDA Academic All-American. Kramer has been named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America second team in the men's track and field/cross country division. He is receiving CoSIDA Academic All-America honors for the first time in his collegiate career.
Kramer is from Pewaukee, Wisconsin. He is a graduate of Lake Country Lutheran High School.
Kramer has had a standout set of seasons in cross country and track and field during the 2016-17 academic year. This past fall, Kramer claimed All-America honors with a 14th place finish at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships. He also helped the Knights capture a Great Lakes Regional title, as he took second individually at the Great Lakes Regional meet to earn Great Lakes All-Region honors. He took first at the MIAA Championships and was named the MIAA's Most Valuable Runner. He was named to the All-MIAA first team.
During the winter and spring, he helped Calvin capture MIAA titles in both indoor and outdoor track and field. During the indoor season, he captured an MIAA indoor title in the 5,000 meters to land a spot on the All-MIAA Indoor Track and Field Team. He later qualified for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships where he placed 12th in the 5,000 meters. In addition, he was named a two-time MIAA Indoor Track and Field Runner of the Week and was named to the USTFCCCA Great Lakes All-Region Indoor Track and Field Team.
At the MIAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships he placed third in the 1500 meters. He was also named to the USTFCCCA Great Lakes All-Region Outdoor Track and Field Team.
Academically, Kramer majored in philosophy at Calvin and was graduated last weekend. He was a two-time member of the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team in men's cross country.
Calvin student-athletes have now received CoSIDA Academic All-America honors 121 times.
MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
The Calvin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams have once again received academic awards from the College Swim Coaches Association of America.
Both teams have received the CSCAA Team Scholar All-America Award.
The Team Scholar All American award is presented to college and university swimming and diving teams, who have achieved a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher. The award is presented twice annually, once in the fall semester/term and in the semester/term of the NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships (Winter/Spring).
The Calvin women's team recorded a 3.51 grade point average during the recently completed spring semester. The Calvin men's team recorded a 3.36 grade point average during the spring semester.
CSCAA Executive Director Joel Shinofield cited Calvin's success, noting: "Coach Dan Gelderloos continues to produce champions - in and out of the pool at Calvin ." He added, "We are very fortunate to have schools like Calvin and people like President LeRoy and Director of Athletics Dr. Jim Timmer who support these exceptional student-athletes."
In total, 720 teams across collegiate swimming, representing 443 institutions achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the Spring 2017 Semester.
The Calvin men's and women's team also produced a combined total of 11 individuals that received CSCAA Scholar All-America honors. The selections recognize students that have achieved a grade point average of 3.50 or higher and have participated in their respective NCAA/NAIA/NJCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
Receiving CSCAA Scholar All-America honors from the Calvin women's team are juniors Abby Van Harn, Sarah Bradley and Rachel Mattson; sophomores Kendall Murphy and Anna Serino and freshman Emily Gunderson.
Receiving CSCAA Scholar All-America honors from the Calvin men's team are seniors Brett Stoughton and Eli Holstege, junior Michael Moetmann and sophomores Jared Britton and Ben Holstege.
