CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 26, 2017

SOFTBALL
Calvin 3, Albion 0
Albion 8, Calvin 1
ALBION, Mich. - A school record that stood for 20 years fell on Wednesday afternoon at Albion. Sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley) set the school record for strikeouts in a single season. The Knights split with the Britons, taking game one 3-0 and falling in game two, 8-1. Calvin moves to 19-19 on the year and 4-10 in MIAA play.
Anna Gernant owned the Britons on Wednesday and recorded her second no-hitter of the season. Gernant finished the game with 11 strikeouts and has 230 strikeouts on the season. Shauna Koolhaas had 227 strikeouts in 1997. The victory against the Britons was the 14th of the year for Gernant. Gernant now hold two school records, setting the school record for strikeouts in a game with 18 strikeouts.
"I am nothing without my team behind me," said Gernant. "I am truly humbled by this experience. God is so good and he desrves all the glory, because I would be no where as an athlete or as a person without him."
Sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) started the scoring in the third inning when she singled to shortstop to score sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg).
In the fifth inning, DeGroot had a sacrifice fly that scored freshman Katie Mumby (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake).
"Our defense really stepped up behind Anna," said Calvin head coach Becky Hilgert. "We had two diving plays that helped preserve the no hitter. Anna was pretty locked in on the mound despite not feeling 100 percent. Our offense was able to squeak out a few runs capped off by a big pinch hit RBI by Jordan VanEerden."
Freshman Jorden VanEerden (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) joined in on the scoring with a blast through the middle of the infield to score freshman Kayla Groen (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln Way East).
Sophomore Kristen Newman (Chelsea, Mich./Chelsea) tallied the lone Calvin run in game two with a single in the gap in left field to score Kayla Groen.
The Knights close the season on Saturday against Olivet.
