WOMEN'S LACROSSE
Calvin 18, Kalamazoo 1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team maintained its perfect conference record with an 18-1 victory over Kalamazoo College on Tuesday afternoon at Zuidema Field.
"The team played well today," said head coach Blake Boehm. "It's exciting to see them operate at such a high level. They're seeing each other, communicating well, and executing our game plan flawlessly."
Behind a six-goal effort by MIAA Offensive Player of the Week senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) the Knights extended their win streak to six games.
With the win, the Knights improve to 7-5 on the year with a 5-0 conference record. The Hornets drop to 2-9 overall and 2-3 in MIAA play.
Despite early pressure by Kalamazoo, the Knights struck first as sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J./Indian Hills) fed sophomore Emma Tilma (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) for a goal.
Cefaratti quickly added a pair of goals, including two on free position attempts.
Just after the fifteen-minute mark, freshman Emma Verrett (Beaver, Pa./Beaver County Christian) netted an unassisted goal to put the Knights up 5-0.
After another goal by Cefaratti, Pepper and sophomore Grace Einfeld (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) each scored their first goal of the afternoon.
In the ten minutes remaining before halftime, Pepper completed her hat trick with back-to-back goals while Verrett and Cefaratti also chipped in a goal apiece.
At the break, Calvin held a commanding 12-0 lead and had allowed only one Kalamazoo shot on goal.
Verrett scored thirty seconds into the second half to record a hat trick. The Knights' five additional second-half goals were scored by junior Emma Hall (Harare, Zimbabwe/Chisipite Senior School), sophomore Alyssa Oezer (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian), Cefaratti, junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos) and freshman Jaimie Van De Burg (Lowell, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian).
The lone Kalamazoo goal was scored by Vethania Stavropoulos just under seven minutes into the second half.
Cefaratti led Calvin's offense with six goals, four assists and three ground balls. The Knights outshot the Hornets 41-2 on the afternoon, also holding a 10-7 ground balls advantage.
Sophomore goaltender Ellis Chalfant (St. Louis, Mo./Mary Institute and St. Louis CDS) collected one save in the victory.
The Knights are back in action on Saturday when they host rival Hope College in a battle for first place in the MIAA standings. Game time is set for 4 p.m.

WOMEN'S TENNIS

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team extended its winning streak to five matches on Tuesday. The five-match winning streak is the longest under head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. The Knights picked up a key 9-0 victory over Adrian to move to 4-1 in the MIAA and tied for second place with Kalamazoo. Tuesday was the fifth 9-0 victory of the season for Calvin.
"That was a good, solid match for us," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "I thought Adrian came out of the gate with good intensity. We pulled out some close doubles matches to get a 3-0 lead. We followed it up with pulling out some tight first sets before sealing the win."
The victory moves Calvin to 10-6 on the year and the 10-win mark for the third-straight season. Adrian falls to 7-11 and 2-4 in the MIAA.
The Knights started the day with a victory at No. 3 doubles. The duo of junior Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) downed Makayla Jorgensen and Julia Maltbie, 8-3. The Calvin pair improve to 10-2 on the year and 8-2 at No. 3 doubles.
At No. 2 doubles, senior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./Home School) beat the Bulldogs, 8-4. Turner and Foote are now 4-1 in MIAA action.
The senior duo of Claire Spoelhof (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) topped Amber Laguness and Victoria Watson, 8-6. The Calvin duo improves to 3-1 in the MIAA.
Jessica Bouma made quick work of Ranae Almasy at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-0. Bouma has now won five-straight matches and is now 12-4 in singles play.
Freshman Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Victoria Watson at No. 4 singles. Asfour also picked up her fifth-straight victory and is 4-1 at No.4 singles.
Claire Spoelhof edged Amber Laginess at No. 1 singles, 7-5, 6-3. The victory on Tuesday was the fourth-straight win and is 4-1 in the MIAA in singles play.
Junior Kari Kroeze (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) defeated Makayla Jorgensen at No. 6 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Kroeze improved to 7-3 at No. 6 singles and has won her last four matches.
Micaela Seazzu was victorious over Sam Cyrus at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2. Seazzu is now 2-1 at No. 3 singles.
At No. 5 singles, Liz Turner beat Olivia Neumann, 6-4, 6-1. Turner remains perfect in dual matches in 2017 at 4-0 on the year.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday at Trine. The Knights clinch a spot in the MIAA Tournament with a victory.

MEN'S GOLF

PIERSON, Mich. - The Calvin men's golf team captured the championship of its own Knight Invitational Tuesday afternoon at Pilgrim's Run Golf Club, posting a team score of 304 strokes.
The Knights finished one stroke ahead of rival Hope in the team standings as the Flying Dutchmen were second (305) in the field of eight teams.
Junior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian HS) led the charge for Calvin with a even par round of 73 that was good for second place individually. Sophomore Alec DeJonge (Niles, Mich./Niles HS) tied for fourth individually with a round of 75. Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for seventh with a round of 77.
Sophomore Sam Kuiper (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for 12th place individually with a round of 79. Freshman Josh Song (Diamond Bar, Ca./Diamond Bar HS) rounded out Calvin's starting lineup, firing a score of 85.
Competing individually, junior Matthew Lumbatoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morningstar Academy) had an 85, Alex Wagner (Pentwater, Mich./Pentwater HS) an 86 and sophomore Mitchell Knoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and 87.
Kade Hoeksema of Hope was the tournament medalist with a round of 72.
"It was a beautiful day to play golf," said Calvin men's golf coach Brian Bolt after the tournament. "We had good performances up and down our lineup. We are happy to get the win and we will keep on working to get better."
Calvin will now prepare to host the opening MIAA Spring Qualifier round on Saturday at the Watermark Country Club at 1 p.m.

SOFTBALL

DEFIANCE, Ohio - The Calvin softball team fell to 13-17 on the year with a pair of eight-inning loses on Tuesday. The Knights fell in game one 2-1 and in game two 5-4.
In the fourth inning of game one, sophomore Rachel Borden (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg) singled to shortstop to score sophomore Anna Gernant (West Des Moines, Iowa/Valley).
Defiance would tie the game with a run in the sixth inning. The Yellow Jackets scored the game-winning run in the eighth inning with the international tiebreak rule.
Anna Gernant had 13 strikeouts on one earned run and three hits in game one.
Rachel Borden finished the first game with a game-high two hits.
Calvin struck first in game two in the second inning. Sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian) singled to third base and scored Rachel Borden.
In the third inning, Anna Gernant flied out to right field to score junior Jessica Brasser (Rockford, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian). Sophomore Casey Lawler (Novi, Mich./Novi) doubled through the left side of the infield to score junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg).
Defiance would cut into the Calvin lead with a run in the third inning.
Kaley Frank pushed the lead back to three with a double into the gap in right field to score Maddie DeGroot.
Defiance would chip away at the lead with a run in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning.
The Yellow Jackets would win again in the eighth inning.
Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville) recorded the loss in game two.
Maddie DeGroot and Kaley Frank both finished with three hits.
Sophomore Kayla Carter (Holbrook, Mass./South Shore Christian Academy) recorded her first at bat of the season in game two.
The Knights return to action on Thursday when they host Hope in the rivalry doubleheader.
