CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR APRIL 4, 2017

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 9, Alma 0

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team improved to 7-6 on the year with a 9-0 sweep over the visiting Scots of Alma College. Alma falls to 3-8 on the season. Calvin moves to 1-1 in the MIAA and Alma is now 0-2 in MIAA play.
"I thought today was a nice match for us," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "I thought that we played well from top to bottom. I thought we played well for this being our MIAA home opener and coming off of a long match last night."
The Knights started the MIAA home opener sweeping doubles play. Senior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich./home school) got the ball rolling with an 8-0 sweep at No. 2 doubles. The senior of Claire Spoelhof (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) notched an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles. Junior Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and freshman Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) won at No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
Anna Asfour swept Matilda Ennis at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Liz Turner clinched the match for Calvin at No. 5 singles, defeating Jessica Penhale, 6-1, 6-0.
Claire Spoelhof downed Claudia Barajas at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Junior Kari Kroeze (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) brought out the broom at No. 6 singles, sweeping Amy Wood, 6-0, 6-0.
Lark Foote finished the match with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 4 singles over Chloe Ramsey.

The Knights resume MIAA play on Saturday when they host the Comets of Olivet College.

MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

For the second consecutive week, the Calvin men's track and field team holds a Top 25 national ranking.

The Knights are ranked 22nd in the latest USTFCCCA Division III Top 25 poll for outdoor track and field, up one spot from a week ago.

Calvin is also ranked second in the USTFCCCA Division III Great Lakes Regional rankings, trailing only Mount Union.

Calvin returns to action on Saturday when it competes at the Ferris State University Bulldog Invitational in Big Rapids.

ADRIAN, Mich. - Calvin dropped both ends of a conference doubleheader at Adrian Tuesday afternoon, falling by scores of 3-1 and 5-0.

In game one, Calvin (11-9 overall, 0-4 MIAA) outhit Adrian 6-3 but the Bulldogs came up with a timely two-out hit and capitalized on an error and wild pitch to outscore the Knights.

Adrian took a 2-0 lead in the third on a two-out double by starting pitcher Paige Cubberly that brought home runners from second and third.

In the fifth, Adrian used a two-out walk, a hit, an error and then a wild pitch to add another run and take a 3-0 lead.

Calvin scored its lone run in the sixth as junior Jessica Brasser (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapdis Christian HS) brought home sophomore Maddie DeGroot (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) with a single down the right field line.

Freshman Mallory Hoatlin (Grand Rapids, Mich./Kenowa Hills HS) belted a two-out double in the seventh but the Knights were unable to do any further damage.

Sophomore Anna Gernant (Des Moines, Ia./Valley HS) took the loss for Calvin in the circle, striking out 12 and walking six.

Junior Kaley Frank (Edwardsburg, Mich./Edwardsburg HS) had two of Calvin's six hits.

In game two, Calvin was outhit 11-1. Adrian scored a run in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.

Senior Paige Groom (Potterville, Mich./Potterville HS) took the loss for Calvin in the circle.

Calvin returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Cornerstone for a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.

MEN'S GOLF

MARIAN, Ind. - Calvin took fourth in a field of nine teams at the two-day, 36-hole Broadmoor Invitational hosted by Marian University Monday and Tuesday.

Calvin carded a two-day total of 612 strokes, posting a team score of 300 on Monday and score of 312 on Tuesday.

Junior Ben VanScoyk (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) tied for third individually with a 36-hole total of 143 strokes, firing a round of 70 on Monday and a round of 73 on Tuesday.

Junior John Van Noord (Troy, Mich./Oakland Christian HS) had a 71 on Monday and a 74 on Tuesday to finished seventh individual with a 36-hole total of 145 strokes.

Sophomore Alec DeJonge (Niles, Mich./Niles HS) had a 163 (77-86) while junior Matthew Lumbantoruan (Jakarta, Indonesia/Morningstar Academy) had an 85 and a 79 for a two-day total of 164.

Freshman Joshua Song (Diamond Bar, Ca./Diamond Bar HS) had an 82 and an 87 for a two-day score of 169.

Mount Mercy University took first place at the tournament with a score of 580. Antonio Maciel of Cardinal Stritch University was the tournament medalist, shooting 139 (69-70).

Calvin is back in action next Monday when it competes at the Steve Tyler Memorial Tournament in Kalamazoo.
