VOLLEYBALL

PHOENIX, Ariz. - Calvin College junior Alyssa Scholten is being honored at the 2017 NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four in Phoenix, Arizona. Scholten is being recognized for her selection as the NCAA Elite 90 Award winner for Division III in women's volleyball. Scholten along with other Elite 90 winners will be recognized on Monday night on the court at halftime of the national championship game between Gonzaga and North Carolina.
"This has been the most incredible week," said Scholten. "Just being able to experience the environment and getting to feel the anticipation and the excitement has been really cool and takes me back to our championship experience. It has also been humbling and such a tremendous honor to represent Calvin College and Division III volleyball on such a big platform. Getting to meet the other Elite 90 winners here has also been cool. To be surrounded by such driven student-athletes in such a unique setting has been really special."
Scholten, a junior from Byron Center, Michigan, majoring in speech pathology, currently carries a 4.0 grade-point average. The Elite 90 Award was presented to Scholten at the NCAA Division III Women's Volleyball Championships banquet in November in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. Scholten and the Knights won the third national title for the volleyball program.
Scholten participated in many Final Four festivities this past week. She attended NCAA Fan Fest and the March Madness Music Festival. Scholten was also invited to NCAA Men's Basketball Salute Banquet and all three games at the Final Four. During her free time, she was able to visit Calvin volleyball assistant coach Laura Bindon, hike Cathedral Rock in Sedona, Arizona, and enjoy the Arizona weather.
"I am so happy for Alyssa, our volleyball program, and Calvin College," said Calvin volleyball head coach Dr. Amber Warners. "It is great she will be recognized for outstanding academic achievement. She works extremely hard at everything that she does and I am proud of her for all that she has accomplished."
The Elite 90, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 90 Award is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA's championships.
Scholten is the fifth Calvin student-athlete to be awarded the NCAA Elite 90 Award.
The national championship game will be televised on CBS. The game is scheduled to begin at 9:20 EDT.
WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 6, Spring Arbor 3

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team had lost 4-5 to Spring Arbor the last two seasons heading into Monday. The Knights snapped that streak with a 6-3 victory over the visiting Cougars. The victory on Monday also snapped a three-match-losing skid for the Knights to move Calvin to 6-6 on the season.
"Losing 5-4 the last two years, we knew it was going to be a battle today," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We started out taking two of three at doubles and we knew we had to do that to have a chance to win. Even after that, we still had to win one of the two final courts that we were on. It was nice to see our freshman Anna battle back after losing the first set and seal the win for us. Lark had a great victory for us and I am proud of Jessica picking up her first victory at No. 1 singles."
After the Cougars struck first on Monday with a victory at No. 1 doubles, the Knights would rally to win two doubles points. Junior Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) defeated Brianna VanRavenswaay and Jewell Allen at No. 3 doubles, 8-2. Senior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich.) secured an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles to give the Knights the lead.
Jessica Bouma recorded her first-career victory at No. 1 singles at Calvin on Monday to give Calvin a 3-1 lead. Bouma downed Mary-Kate McShane, 6-0, 6-1.
The Cougars would fight back and tie the match at three with victories at No. 2 and No. 3 singles.
Liz Turner made quick work of Alyssa LePard (6-1, 6-1) at No. 6 singles to give the Knights the lead.
Freshman Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) secured the victory for Calvin with a three-set thriller at No. 4 singles. Asfour rallied to defeat Brianna Emma Joseph, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.
The final point of the day came at No. 5 singles and a come-from-behind victory for Lark Foote. After dropping the first set to Brianna VanRavenswaay, 6-1, Foote would fight back to win 7-5, 10-4.
The Knights return to action on Tuesday when they host Alma for the MIAA home opener.
