CALVIN KNIGHT SPORTS REPORT FOR FEBRUARY 10 (Part Two)
Track and Field Teams Have Strong Weekend Performances at Grand Valley State & Aquinas College Competitions
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin women's track and field team had a stellar day of competition Friday. Calvin sent a large distance crew to the Grand Valley State Big Meet Friday morning and sent the bulk of its team to the Aquinas College Little Meet Friday evening.
At the Grand Valley State Big Meet, sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmoore, Wash./Inglemoor HS) had a career-best time of 5:11.81 in the mile run.
In the 5,000 meters, freshman Kristen Lundberg (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian HS) led the Knights with a time of 18:23.45 while senior Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) came in at a time of 18:48.34.
Freshman Emma Schroer (Wheaton, Il./Wheaton Warrenville-South HS) had a time of 19:00.70 while freshman Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a time of 19:03.56.
Junior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS) was next at 19:04.09 while junior Catherine Croft (Grand Rapids, Mich./Coopersville HS) clocked in with a time of 19:21.61. Junior Katie McLain (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian HS) ran a time of 19:28.44 followed by sophomore Breanna Kooiman (Tinley Park, Il./Chicago Christian HS) in 19:32.17 and senior Autumn Vonk (Zeeland, Mich./Zeeland West HS) finishing things out at 19:48.46.
At the Aquinas College Little Meet, Calvin took first place in six events led by junior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) who won the 200 meters in a season-best time of 26.33 and captured the long jump in a season-best leap of 18-1 1/2.
Junior Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Huron HS) won the 400 meters (1:02.71) while freshman Jackie Amissah-Nunoo won the 60 meters in a season-best time of 8.12.
In the 800 meters, junior Caroline Boss (Charlevoix, Mich./Charlevoix HS) took home the 800 meter crown with a time of 2:23.29.
In the shot put, senior Michaela Meckes (Bay City, Mich./Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) claimed a win with a toss of 38-11.
In the mile run, freshman Leah Bishop (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) took third (5:54.42). The Knights went 5-6-7 in the 60 meter hurdles with junior Bethany Van Eck (Clifton, NJ/Easter Christian HS) was fifth (9.90), sophomore Alyssa Wolter (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS) sixth (10.10) and sophomore Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) seventh (10.17).
In the weight throw, senior Stephanie Groenwold (Villa Park, Il./Timothy Christian HS) led a 2-3 finish as she was second (42-8) and Meckes third (41-8).
In the high jump, Van Eck was second (5-1 3/4), freshman Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) was third (4-11 3/4) and Erin Van Lenten fourth (4-7 3/4).
At the pole vault competition, freshman Annalane Miller (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) was fourth (9-9) while junior Kayla Ven Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) was fifth (9-3).
In the triple jump, sophomore Madison Orth (Soldotna, Alaska/Cook Inlet Academy) was third (34-7 3/4).
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of Boss, VanderMeulen, freshman Margaret VanWylen (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) and sophomore Selvi Bunce (Savagae, MN/Burnsville HS) was second in 4:18.00.
Calvin is back in action next Friday, competing at the Grand Valley State Tune-Up Invitational in Allendale.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
The Calvin men's track and field team had a standout day of track and field action on Friday. A large group of Calvin's distance runners competed at the Grand Valley State University Big Meet in Allendale Friday morning and afternoon while the remainder of Calvin's team competed at the Aquinas College Little Meet Friday night.
At Grand Valley, Calvin put together several strong races in the 5,000 meter run.
Senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) led the Knights in the 5K with a season-best time of 14:39.15 that places him sixth on the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field performance list. Kramer was one of three Knights to run sub-15 minute times in the 5K as junior Andrew Philipose (Mount Prospect, Il./John Hersey HS) had a season-best time of 14:50.48 while senior Nathan Van Haitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) had a career-best time of 14:59.52.
Freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) also had a career-best time of 15:03.20. Sophomore Jamison Koeman (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) had a solid time of 15:09.11 while senior Zachary Nowicki (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) came in at 15:10.33.
Other Calvin finishers in the 5,000 meters included senior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) clocking in with a time of 15:15.93, junior Mark DeJong (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) coming in at 15:22.85, junior Matthew Boelens (Bolton, Mass./Nashoba Regional HS) running 15:29.16, senior Matthew Plantinga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) running 15:34.36, sophomore Jacob Pettinga (Saugatuck, Mich./Saugutuck HS) running 15:36.70, freshman Addison Smith (Seoul, South Korea/Seoul Foreign School) running 15:37.73, freshman Caleb Ferguson (Naperville, Il./Neuqua Valley HS) running 15:38.68, freshman Caleb Swaim running 15:55.93, sophomore Jonathan Randall (Hopkington, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) going 16:05.44, junior Nathan Brookhouse (Whitinsville, Mass./Whitinsville Christian HS) going 16:06.57 and freshman Jason Klaasen (Jenison, Mich./Unity Christian HS) running 16:21.89.
At the Aquinas College Little Meet, Calvin took first place in four events. Senior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour HS) won the mile run (4:28.32) while sophomore Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian Academy) won the long jump (21-8 3/4). Sophomore Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) captured the 800 meters (1:59.36). Sophomore Brendan Van Houten (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) won the weight throw with a career-best throw of 52-0. Van Houten was one of four Knights that scored in the weight throw as freshman Jayvin Wolfe (Middleton, Mich./Fulton HS) was fourth (42-6 1/4), senior Erick Holder (Marian, Ind./Eastbrook HS) sixth (37-1 1/4) and freshman Jordin Jorritsma (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) seventh (36-7 3/4).
Freshman Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Il.) was third in the high jump (6-3 1/4) and third in the long jump (20-10 3/4). Senior Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was sixth in the high jump (6-1 1/4).
In the 60 meter hurdles, Calvin went 2-6-7 with junior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) placing second (8.92), junior Jeremiah Stout (Escondido, CA/Escondido Calvin Christian HS) placing sixth (9.40) and freshman Sam Veenstra (North Haledon, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) placing seventh (9.44).
In the pole vault, freshman Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was second (13-9 1/4), junior Jacob Stout (Escondido, Ca./Escondido Calvin Christian HS) placing third (13-3 1/2) and senior Devin Schweigert (Whitehall, Mich./Whitehall HS) placing fourth (12-9 1/2).
In the 400 meters, sophomore James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS) was second (53.16). Junior Hendrik VerMeulen (Bright's Grove, Ont./St. Patrick's Secondary School) was third (1:59.76).
Calvin's 4x400 meter relay team of senior Nathan Anderson (Milan, Mich./Milan HS) , Jeninga, Peterson and Schaap took second in a time of 3:32.72.
Calvin returns to action next Friday, competing at the Grand Valley State Tune-Up Meet.
