Volleyball Team Unveils National Championship Video;

VOLLEYBALL
On Wednesday night, the 2016 Calvin women's volleyball team raised a national banner to the top of Van Noord Arena. On Thursday, the national champion Knights celebrated with a banquet in downtown Grand Rapids. At the banquet, the team's national championship video was unveiled. The video can be found at:

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin College senior Anna Timmer has been named to the CoSIDA Division III Academic All-District 6 team in women's basketball.

As a member of the CoSIDA Academic All-District team, Timmer advances to the national ballot and is now eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-America consideration.
District 6 includes NCAA Division III schools from Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

A native of Caledonia and a graduate of Grand Rapids South Christian High School, Timmer is averaging 13.7 points and 11.6 rebounds a game while connecting on 59.1 percent of her field goal attempts.

This season she has notched 17 double-doubles, ranking her seventh nationally in that category. She is also ranked eighth nationally in field goal percentage.

She currently ranks eighth on the Calvin women's basketball career scoring list with 1,214 points and fourth in rebounds with 732. She is one of only four players in Calvin women's basketball history to amass more than 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in a career.
Timmer was named a preseason Division III All-American by Women's DIII News this past fall. As a junior last season, she was named to the All-MIAA first team and to the D3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region second team while also receiving honorable mention All-America honors from Women's DIII News.

Timmer is majoring in education and kinesiology. She has been a three-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll and a seven-time member of the Calvin Dean's List.
To be eligible for CoSIDA Academic All-District consideration, an individual must be a starter or a key reserve and have maintained a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.30.

The Division II and III Academic All-America(r) program is being financially supported by the NCAA Division II and III national governance structures, to assist CoSIDA with handling the awards fulfillment aspects for the 2016-17 DII and DIII Academic All-America(r) teams program.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY
The United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association has named its 2016 All-Academic team and individual recipients in women's cross country and the Calvin women's cross country team has received accolades on both counts.
Led by head coach Brian Diemer, the Calvin women's team posted a team cumulative grade point average this past fall of 3.37. In order to receive the award, teams must post a minimum team GPA of 3.10.
Individually, Calvin had five members of its women's team receive honors. Those five individuals include senior Lauren Strohben (Stillwater, MN./St. Croix Preparatory HS), junior Marissa McGahan (Brighton, Mich./Brighton HS), sophomore Katie Diekema (Kenmoore, Wash./Ingelmoor HS) and freshmen Johanna Admiraal (Cincinnati, Oh./Towson HS) and Kristen Lundberg (Albuquerque, NM/Hope Christian HS).
Individuals needed to have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 25 percent at their respective NCAA III Regional Championships.
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY

WOMEN'S TENNIS
Calvin 8, Cornerstone 1

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's tennis team started the 2017 season with a 9-0 victory over Cornerstone on Thursday evening. The match was also the first of the season for Cornerstone.
"It was a great first match for us," said head coach Kevin Van Haitsma. "We played some good, solid doubles and we played very sharp in singles."
Senior Liz Turner (Audobon, Pa./Delaware County Christian) and junior Lark Foote (Okemos, Mich.) started the night with an 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles over Kali Holmes and Madeline Grose. The senior duo of Claire Spoelhof (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) and Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, Calif./San Dimas) earned an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, over Lauren Brendel and Ana Hoezee. Junior Jessica Bouma (Kalamazoo, Mich./Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Micaela Seazzu (Albuquerque, N.M./Sandia) earned the final doubles victory of the day at No. 2 doubles over Sierra Griffith and Hannah Ottosen, 8-1.
Micaela Seazzu picked up the first singles point of the night at No. 4 singles over Sierra Griffith, 6-0, 6-0.
At No. 3 singles, Ellie Benzel made quick work of Hannah Ottosen, 6-0, 6-0.
Claire Spoelhof was victorious over Lauren Brendel at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 6-0.
Jessica Bouma earned the victory over Ana Hoezee at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0.
Freshman Anna Asfour (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) secured a victory in her first dual match at Calvin with a victory at No. 5 singles over Madeline Grose, 6-0, 6-0.
Lark Foote finished the sweep at No. 6 singles, defeating Kali Holmes, 6-0, 6-2.
The Knights return to action on Feb. 18 at Aquinas.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin women's lacrosse team was the favorite in the 2017 MIAA preseason coaches' poll. The Knights received 61 total points and five first-place votes.
"We're very proud of the success we've had over the past few years and are honored by the results of the preseason poll," said head coach Blake Boehm. "The conference is very competitive and every year presents new challenges. As always, we will need to work very hard to achieve our goals. We're excited to play our first game, and I wish every team the best of luck as they begin competing."
Under the direction of head coach Blake Boehm, the Calvin women's lacrosse team is coming off it's first-ever berth into the NCAA Tournament. Calvin went 12-6 in 2016 and 7-1 in MIAA play. Calvin defeated Albion 12-11 in the 2016 MIAA title game, to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
Returning for Calvin in 2017 are first-team All-MIAA selections senior Emily Cefaratti (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central), junior Amanda Davio (Okemos, Mich./Okemos), and Alyssa Gagnon (Minooka, Ill./Minooka). The Knights also return two second-team All-MIAA honorees in junior Madeline Baas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) and sophomore Kelly Pepper (Wyckoff, N.J. / Indian Hills).
Calvin opens its season on March 3 when it faces Asbury in Kentucky.

MEN'S LACROSSE
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's lacrosse team has been picked to finish eighth in the 2017 MIAA preseason coaches' poll. The Knights received 10 total points.
Defending MIAA Champion, Albion earned seven first-place votes to earn 49 points.
Calvin is under the direction of head coach Dave Hoger; the Calvin men's lacrosse team had a record-breaking season in 2016. Finishing at 6-10 and 1-6 in the MIAA.
The Knights open the season on Feb. 25 at Ohio Northern.
