MEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 79, Adrian 67
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin got back on the winning track with a 79-67 victory over Adrian Saturday afternoon at Van Noord Arena.
The victory sets up an early-season showdown for first place in the MIAA standings with rival Hope Wednesday night at Van Noord Arena as Calvin is now 5-1 in the league standings while Hope remained unbeaten at 6-0 with a 78-58 win at Kalamazoo.
Calvin (10-7 overall) started slowly but finished the first half with a flourish to take a 34-21 halftime lead.
The Knights trailed 15-14 with 7:51 remaining in the first half but outscored the visiting Bulldogs (7-10 overall, 1-5 MIAA) 20-6 over the final 7:21 of the first half to take control of the game.
Senior Cam Denney (Bluffton, Ind./Norwell HS) connected on a pair of triples in the run while sophomore Luke Van Boxel (Montague, Mich./Montague HS) added a triple of his own to give the Knights a double-digit lead at the break.
Calvin stretched its lead to 21 points on three free throws by freshman Tony DeWitte (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) with 8:17 remaining.
Adrian countered with a 17-5 run to cut the gap down to single digits at 66-57 with 3:14 showing but got no closer as Calvin hit seven free throws in the final 1:38 to seal the win.
"That was a really good game for our team," said Calvin men's basketball coach Kevin Vande Streek. "We had a little bit of a slow start in the first five minutes. We started to figure it and played well after that. Adrian presents a different style of play and we had to come up with a different game plan for them. I thought our guys did a good job of executing our plan."
Calvin placed four players in double-digits in scoring led by Denney who had 20 ponts and six rebounds. Junior Tony Canonie (South Haven, Mich./South Haven HS) and junior Michael Wilks (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) had 12 points apiece while freshman Deerrick DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Covenant Christian HS) tossed in a career-high 10 points off the bench. Calvin's bench outscored Adrian's reserves 26-6.
Senior Michael Welch (Stevensville, Mich./Lakeshore HS) also had a strong game in reserve with five points and nine rebounds.
Calvin outrebounded Adrian 32-27.
Justin Webster led Adrian with 22 points while Davonte Harris had 19 and Keyon Rainey 14.
Calvin shot 55.6 percent from the field including a season-high 50 percent (7 of 14) from three-point range with five different players converting at least one triple. The Knights were also 22 of 29 (.759) at the charity stripe as Calvin outscored the Bulldogs by 11 points at the free throw line.
Wednesday's game against Hope at Van Noord Arena is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. The game will feature the 194th meeting between the two rivals in men's basketball in a series that sees Hope leading 100-93.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Calvin 81, Kalamazoo 50
KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The women's basketball team improved to 16-2 on the year and 7-2 in the MIAA with a win at Kalamazoo. The Knights downed the Hornets on Saturday, 81-50. Calvin has now won five-straight games.
The Knights started off hot on Saturday, outscoring the Hornets 25-6 in the first quarter. Senior Anna Timmer (Caledonia, Mich./South Christian) and sophomore Rachel Warners (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) did not miss a basket in the first quarter.
Calvin would go into halftime with a 44-17 lead after the Knights outscored the Hornets in the second quarter, 19-11. Junior Ali Spayde (Lewis Center, Ohio/Worthington Christian) led all players with 10 points in the second quarter.
The Maroon and Gold would cruise in the second half and score 37 points to Kalamazoo's 33.
Ali Spayde led all players with 21 points. Spayde drained five three-point baskets to move into fifth place on the Calvin career three-point basket list at 139. She also had a season-high seven assists.
Anna Timmer recorded her 12th double-double of the year with 15 points and 14 rebounds. In the process, she booster her career scoring total to 1,149 points, moving past Judy Wasmer and into 11th place on the Calvin career scoring list.
Senior Lauren Goldthorpe (St. Ignace, Mich./LaSalle) tallied 13 points and junior Bre Luurtsema (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) finished with 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Junior Sarah Cassel (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) also recorded 10 points on Saturday.
The Knights scored 23 points off of 18 Kalamazoo turnovers.
Calvin tallied 43 rebounds on Saturday and held the Hornets to 32 rebounds.
The Maroon and Gold return to action on Wednesday when the Knights host Alma.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Knights fell to a pair of top-25 teams on Saturday afternoon at the University of Chicago. Calvin lost to the No. 10-ranked host Maroons 205-89 and to No. 22 DePauw 167-121. Calvin won two events on Saturday.
The Maroon and Gold started the day taking second place in the 200-yard medley relay at 1:35.51.
Sophomore Ben Holstege (Keswick, Va./Covenant) picked up the first Calvin victory of the day in the 100-yard backstroke at 52.20.
The Knights had two of the three highest scores on the 1-meter boards on Saturday. Senior Dirk Tanis (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian) finished in second place at 248.78 and in third place was junior Michael Moentmann (Solon, Ohio/Solon) at 237.83. Moentmann would win the 3-meter event at 306.65.
Senior Brett Stoughton (Centerville, Ind./Centerville) touched the wall at 52.81 in the 100-yard butterfly to take second place.
The Knights finished the day with a third-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:27.84.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights close the dual-match season at Kalamazoo.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING
CHICAGO, Ill. - The Knights split with two top-25 teams on Saturday at the University of Chicago. The Knights defeated No. 22 DePauw 152-138 and fell to No. 10 Chicago, 225-75. Calvin won two events on Saturday.
Sophomore Danielle Sugijanto (Walnut Creek, Calif./Northgate) recorded a third-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke at 1:02.59
Junior Sarah Bradley (Wheaton, Ill./Wheaton North) picked up the first Calvin victory of the day on the 1-meter boards with a score of 280.40. She would also win the 3-meter event at 306.65.
Junior Abby Van Harn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian) finished in second place in the 100-yard freestyle at 54.11.
Sophomore Anna Serino (Pinckney, Mich./Pinckney) touched the wall at 5:17.01 in the 500-yard freestyle to take third place.
The Knights finished the day with a second-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay at 1:39.21.
Calvin returns to action on Saturday when the Knights close the dual-match season at Kalamazoo.
MEN'S TRACK AND FIELD
GENEVA, Oh. - The Calvin men's indoor track and field team had a strong showing at the Carnegie Mellon Division III Invitational on Saturday at the Spire Institute Academy. Competing in a field of 13 teams, Calvin posted a second place team score of 80 points.
In the men's competition, Calvin collected points from a handful of field event competitors.
Freshman Jonathan Walt (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) was fifth in the pole vault (13-6 1/2).
Sophomore Lee Barents (Redlands, Ca./Arrowhead Christian HS) was fifth in the long jump (20-1 3/4). Sophomore Brendan Van Houten (Comstock Park, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was sixth in the weight thro (46-10 3/4).
Senior Jeiel Burrell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) and freshman Nathan Van Wyhe (Frankfort, Il.) tied for second in the high jump at a height of 6-3 1/4.
In the 60 meter hurdles, junior Chase Rohrer (Ludington, Mich./Ludington HS) took fifth (8.95). In the 400 meter dash, sophomore Luke Peterson (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian HS) was eighth (51.89).
In the distance events, Calvin picked up a pile of points. Senior Jordan Kramer (Pewaukee, Wisc./Lake Country Lutheran HS) led a 1-2-4 Calvin finish as he claimed the win in a time of 14:58.93. Junior Andrew Rylaarsdam (Grandville, Mich./Calvin Christian HS) was second (15:32.08) and senior Matthew Plantinga (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was fourth (16:07.35).
In the mile run, freshman Tyler Johnson (Springfield, Il./Pleasant Plains HS) was second (4:22.44), senior Jonathan Schaap (Mahomet, Il./Mahomet-Seymour HS) fourth (4:23.30) and senior Nathan Van Haitsma (Olympia, Wash./Olympia HS) fifth (4:23.94).
The highlight of the meet however came in the 4x400 meter relay as the quartet of junior Noah Buteyn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS), sophomore James Jeninga (Brookfield, Wisc./Milwaukee Lutheran HS), Peterson and senior Nathan Anderson (Milan, Mich./Milan HS) took first place with a time of 3:25.15, edging the relay from Rochester University by a hundreth of a second.
"I was very pleased with our performances today, said Calvin head track and field coach Bret Otte. "I thought our team competed very hard. Our distance runners in particular had a great afternoon and our 4x400 meter relay really closed out the meet in a big way. We are missing several athletes who are currently studying off campus for our (January) interim term but I thought we built great momentum for our season moving forward. When we return our entire team the first week of February, it should be an exciting time for our program and season.
Calvin returns to action next Saturday, competing at the GVSU Mike Lints Invitational.
WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD

Junior Jenna Dyksen (Hawthorne, NJ/Hawthorne HS) took home a win in the long jump (17-1 3/4) while also placing second in the 200 meters with a season-best time of 26.22, finishing just behind winner Mary Conti of New York University who clocked in with a time of 26.17.
In the shot put, senior Michaela Meckes (Bay City, Mich./Saginaw Valley Lutheran HS) placed second with a season-best throw of 37-3 1/4.
In the high jump, junior Bethany Van Eck (Cliffton, NJ) was second (5-2 1/4) while sophomore Erin Van Lenten (Hawthorne, NJ/Eastern Christian HS) and freshman Annika Staal (Woodinville, Wash./Bellevue Christian HS) tied for third (5-1 1/4)
In the 400 meters, junior Anita VanderMeulen (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Skyline HS) was fourth in a time of 1:00.55.
In the 60 meter hurdles, sophomore Alyssa Wolters (Vincennes, Ind./South Knox HS) was sixth (9.94).
Calvin also ran well in the distance events. In the 3,000 meter run, senior Hope Gaffner (Hudsonville, Mich./Unity Christian HS) made her return to action with a fourth place tim eof 10:46.19. Freshman Michelle Koetje (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) was seventh (10:59.06).
In the 5,000 meters, senior Lauren Strohbehn (Stillwater, Mn./St. Croix Preparatory HS) took home the win in a time of 18:22.57 while freshman teammate Johanna Admiraal (Cincinnati, Oh./Towson HS) was third (18:45.14).
