GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 1 Calvin men's hockey team welcomed the No. 6 Hope College Flying Dutchmen to Eagles Ice Center for the second matchup of the two-game rivalry series.
The Knights entered the game at 14-1-1 overall while the Flying Dutchmen held a 13-5 season record.
The Dutchmen handed the Knights their first loss of the season on Friday night by a score of 4-2. Calvin trailed 2-0 early in the second period, but rallied back behind goals from Frank Moreschi and Cam Bell, tying the game with 4:40 left before intermission. However, Hope's Elliot Digison scored the go-ahead goal with 1:15 to play in the second period and a late empty-net goal secured the upset victory for the Dutchmen.
On Saturday, the Knights bounced back from Friday's loss, taking down Hope 5-1.
8:09 into the game, Calvin junior Noah Szenderski got the Knights on the board first with an early unassisted goal. Late in the first period, senior Cam Bell capitalized on a 5-on-3 Calvin advantage, netting a goal off assists from Thomas Rietema and Nick Hirst.
The Knights held the Dutchmen scoreless for the first period and held a 2-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
Hope came out of the break strong, as Elliot Digison scored a quick goal less than three minutes into the period. But less than a minute later, Rietema responded with a goal for the Knights to make the score 3-1, still in favor of the home team. Jordan Duncan and Hirst were credited with assists on the scoring play.
As the second period neared its conclusion, Duncan sped into the offensive zone and fed senior teammate Ryan Racanelli for a fourth Calvin goal.
Thirty seconds later, Bell found that back of the net again, but the goal was waved off as Calvin was called for a penalty.
At the second intermission, Calvin possessed a comfortable 4-1 lead.
Only one goal was scored in the final period. With 9:10 left to play, Rietema sniped his second goal of the night to widen the gap to four goals. In the final scoring play, Hirst picked up his third assist of the night.
