CALVIN ACHA ICE HOCKEY

Calvin's ACHA Division III ice hockey team is off to a blazing start as the Knights are currently 10-0 on the year. The Knights recently announced a transition to the ACHA Division I level beginning next year.

MEN'S SOCCER

A record 11 Calvin men's soccer players have received All-MIAA honors. Seven Calvin players have been named to the All-MIAA first team while four have been named to the second team.

In addition, senior Stephan Hooker has been named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player while freshman Ian Adams has been named the MIAA's Newcomer of the Year.

Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are Hooker, senior Isky Van Doorne, juniors Mitch Stark, Matt Hinds and Nate Van Ryn and sophomores Jacob Witte and Trent Vegter.

Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are Adams, seniors David Waterson and Jay Noyola and sophomore Bobby McCaw.

STEPHAN HOOKER

A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Hooker is the 18th individual in Calvin men's soccer history to be named the MIAA's Most Valuable Player. A midfielder, Hooker is also receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the third straight year.

During the conference season, Hooker tallied five goals and three assists. Three of his goals were game-winners.

ISKY VAN DOORNE

Van Doorne hails from Calgary, Alberta. He is a graduate of Western Canada High School. Van Doorne came up with five goals and an assist in league play this fall. A midfielder, he received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors once. He is receiving All-MIAA first team accolades for the first time.

MITCH STARK

A forward out of South Lyon, Stark is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the first time after receiving All-MIAA second team accolades the last two years. A graduate of South Lyon High School, Stark was a two-time MIAA Offensive Player of the Week this year.

Stark led the MIAA in assists with eight in conference play while also scoring three goals. He also had a goal and an assist in the MIAA Tournament.

MATT HINDS

A defender from Frankenmuth, Hinds is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the first time. Hinds tallied two goals and six assists in league play this fall as he took the bulk of Calvin's corner kicks.

A graduate of Frankenmuth High School, Hinds was also part of a Calvin defense that allowed just three goals in 14 conference games.

NATE VAN RYN

A goalkeeper, Van Ryn is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the first time. A native of Grandville and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Van Ryn was a two-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week selection this fall.

He led the MIAA with a 0.22 goals-against-average along with 32 saves and 10 shutout victories.

JACOB WITTE

A forward, Witte hails from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. Witte scored six goals and collected three assists in league play this year. He scored three game-winning goals in the league and assisted on another in the MIAA Tournament.

Witte is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the first time.

TRENT VEGTER

A center back on defense, Vegter is receiving All-MIAA first team honors for the second straight year.

Vegter was a two-time MIAA Defensive Player of the Week this fall and was a linchpin of a Calvin defensive unit that allowed only three goals in 14 conference games. He was also an offensive threat, scoring two goals and chalking up five assists in league play. He added an additional goal in MIAA Tournament action.

IAN ADAMS - A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Adams is the fourth individual in Calvin men's soccer history to receive the MIAA Newcomer of the Year award. Previous recipients included Stephan Hooker (2013), Mitch Stark (2014) and Trent Vegter (2015). Adams was a huge part of a Calvin offense that fired in 46 goals in 14 conference games this year. Adams tallied seven goals and three assists in conference play. In the MIAA Tournament, he cranked in three more goals including the game-winner in a 7-1 semifinal victory over Albion.

DAVID WATERSON - A senior midfielder from DeWitt, Waterson is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the second straight year. A strong two-way player, Waterson came up with two assists in league play while also contributing to Calvin's defensive efforts.

JAY NOYOLA - A senior center back, Noyola hails from East Lansing and is a graduate of Lansing Christian High School. He is receiving All-MIAA second team accolades for the second straight year. Noyola played a pivotal role in 11 Calvin shutout victories in the league this year while also scoring a pair of goals.

BOBBY MCCAW - A sophomore striker, McCaw is receiving All-MIAA second team honors for the first time. He hails from Dubuque, Iowa, and is a graduate of Hempstead High School. He finished the conference campaign with six goals and one assist.

A two-time MIAA Offensive Player of the Week, McCaw had a big second half of the season for the Knights, scoring a pair of goals in a 4-1 win at Albion in the final week of the MIAA regular season and then scoring four goals in MIAA Tournament play last week.

Calvin captured the MIAA regular season and MIAA Tournament titles this year. The Knights went 13-1-0 in the regular season to claim their 10th consecutive league title. The Knights then defeated Albion and Alma in the MIAA Tournament to win the MIAA Tournament crown.

Calvin will play in the NCAA III Tournament this weekend, facing Ohio Northern on Friday at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Three members of the Calvin women's soccer team have received All-MIAA honors.

Senior Kailey Jo has been named to the All-MIAA first team while senior Brianna Russell and sophomore Kali Mouw have been named to the All-MIAA second team.

All three individuals are receiving All-MIAA honors in women's soccer for the first time.

A defender, Jo is from Grand Rapids and is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School. On defense, Jo played a key role in Calvin posting five shutouts in conference play. The primary taker of corner kicks, she also was credited with two goals and four assists in league action. She was named MIAA Defensive Player of the Week once.

A forward, Russell hails from Plainwell and is a graduate of Delton-Kellogg High School. She led Calvin in scoring with nine goals, three assists and 21 points in league action. She finished fourth in the MIAA in goals scored and fifth in total points. Three of her nine goals proved to be game-winners.

A first-year member of the Calvin women's soccer team, Mouw made her mark as an outside back on Calvin's defensive unit. She also played a key role in Calvin posting five shutouts in conference action. Mouw also scored two goals for Calvin in MIAA games.

Calvin finished the year with an overall record of 11-9-1 while placing third in the MIAA regular season standings with a 10-5-1 conference mark.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Calvin College senior Anna Timmer has been named a D3hoops.com preseason Honorable Mention All-American. It is the second preseason national citation for Timmer. Earlier this fall, she was named a Women's DIII News preseason All-American.
A native of Caledonia and a graduate of South Christian High School, Timmer averaged a team-leading 14.2 points along with 7.6 rebounds a game last year while connecting on 57.4 percent of her field goal attempts. She was named to the 2016 All-MIAA first team and also received D3hoops.com All-Region accolades and was named a 2016 Women's DIII News Honorable Mention All-American.
The Calvin women's basketball team will be under the direction of head coach Chuck Winkelman this year. Winkelman will be in his first year at the helm of the Knights after previously serving as head women's basketball coach at Millsaps College and Hendrix College.
Calvin is scheduled to open its 2016-17 campaign on November 15 against Great Lakes Christian.
