Volleyball/Men's Soccer Given NCAA III Tournament Assignments;
Men's Soccer Players Receive Player of the Week Honors;
Calvin Swimmers Receive MIAA Swimmer of the Week Honors

VOLLEYBALL

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Calvin has been selected to host an eight team NCAA Division III volleyball regional from Nov. 10-12. The winner of the region will advance to the quarterfinal round in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The Knights are making their 26th NCAA Tournament appearance and the 13th-straight appearance with coach Warners.
The Knights will host Pittsburgh-Bradford in the opening match of the tournament. The Panthers come into the match at 25-5 and AMCC champions at 9-0. The match is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. on Thursday.
The Knights are 45-25 all-time in the NCAA Division III Tournament, including a 32-10 record under head coach Dr. Amber Warners.
"We are very excited for the NCAA Tournament," said head coach Amber Warners. "We are honored and excited to be able to participate in the tournament and to host."
Joining Calvin will be Pittsburgh-Bradford, DePauw, Carnegie-Mellon, Ohio Northern, Millikin, Wittenberg and Bethany (W. Va.).
All the matches will take place in Van Noord Arena.

MEN'S SOCCER

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Calvin men's soccer team will start the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Tournament in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The Knights secured a sport in the tournament with winning the MIAA Tournament with a 4-2 victory over Alma. Calvin will play Ohio Northern on Friday at Carnegie Mellon at 1:30 p.m.
"We are really excited for the opportunity," said head coach Ryan Souders. "There are lots of really, really good teams. We are honored to represent the MIAA. We'll head out to Pennsylvania and give it everything we've got."
The Polar Bears come into the match at 17-1-4 and runners-up in the OAC at 6-1-2.
The Knights lead the all-time series, 4-1-0, including a 2-0 victory in the 2010 NCAA Division III Tournament.
Calvin is making its 15th trip to the NCAA III Tournament including its ninth in the last 10 years.
Joining Calvin and Ohio Northern will be host Carnegie Mellon and Ohio Wesleyan. Carnegie Mellon and Ohio Wesleyan will play at 11 a.m. Friday. The regional final is set for Saturday at 1 p.m.
Calvin is 17-12-8 in the NCAA Tournament all-time. The Knights advanced all the way to the semifinals last year, the Maroon and Gold fell to Loras, 0-1.

MORE MEN'S SOCCER

For the second consecutive week, Calvin College sophomore Bobby McCaw has been named the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week in men's soccer. In addition, sophomore Trent Vegter has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men's soccer.

A native of Dubuque, Iowa, McCaw had four goals and an assist last week as the Knights defeated Albion and Alma to capture the MIAA Tournament title.

A graduate of Hempstead High School, McCaw had a goal and an assist in a 7-1 win over Albion in the MIAA Tournament semifinals. He then notched a hat trick in a 4-2 win over Alma in the MIAA Tournament final. His second goal in the win over Alma proved to be the game-winner.

A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Vegter is receiving MIAA Defensive Player of the Week honors for the second time this year.

Vegter played a key role in both of Calvin's victories last week in the MIAA Tournament. He also scored a goal in Calvin's semifinal win over Albion.

At 18-2-0, Calvin has advanced to the NCAA III Tournament for the 10th consecutive year. The Knights will face Ohio Northern University in a first round game Friday at 1:30 p.m. on the campus of Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.

MEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College sophomore Ben Holstege has been named the MIAA Men's Swimmer of the Week.

A native of Keswick, Virginia, Holstege had a standout set of performances at the Calvin Quad this past weekend, helping the Knights take second place in the final team standings.

At the two-day competition, Holstege took first place in the 100 backstroke (52.38) and 100 freestyle (47.63) and second in the 200 IM (1:59.43). He also led off Calvin's winning 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay teams. He also swam on Calvin's second place 400 freestyle relay squad.

Calvin's 400 freestyle relay squad came up with a time of 3:10.83 that ranks ninth nationally.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING

For the second time in three weeks, Calvin College junior Abby Van Harn has been named the MIAA's Swimmer of the Week.

A native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School, Van Harn captured wins in three individual events at the Calvin Quad this weekend.

Van Harn took home victories in the 50 freestyle (24.20), 100 freestyle (52.71) and 200 freestyle (1:55.58). Her time in the 50 free ranks eighth nationally, her time in the 100 free ranks fourth nationally and her time in the 200 free ranks 15th nationally.

Van Harn also swam on Calvin's winning 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay teams as well as Calvin's second place 400 medley relay team. Calvin's 200 freestyle relay (1:38.87) had a time that is ranked ninth nationally, its 400 freestyle relay had a time (3:36.52) that is ranked ninth nationally and an 800 freestyle relay team (7:53.20) that is ranked second nationally.

Van Harn's efforts helped the Calvin women capture first place at the Calvin Quad with a score of 1,107.5 points.
