Volleyball Sweeps Saint Mary's / Women's Soccer Shut Out at Albion

VOLLEYBALL
Calvin 3, Saint Mary's 0

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The No. 1 Calvin volleyball team improved to 17-0 with a 3-0 victory at Saint Mary's. The Knights are now 11-0 in MIAA play with the 25-21, 25-15, 25-10 victory. Saint Mary's falls to 10-12 and 6-4 in MIAA action.
"It is never easy to win on the road," said head coach Amber Warners. "Saint Mary's did a good job tonight. I was happy with how we were able to finish the match today."
The Knights rallied back from a 3-0 deficit in the first set to take a 10-5 lead. The Belles would fight back and close the lead to 12-11. The Knights would pull away with the set with a 9-3 run. Calvin would go on to take the set, 25-21. Senior Laura Danhoff (Willard, Ohio/Willard) and sophomore Anna Kamp (Orland Park, Ill./Chicago Christian) both had five kills in the first set.
The Belles jumped out to an early 7-4 lead in the second set. Calvin would take back the lead with a 6-1 run, behind the serve of Laura Danhoff. Saint Mary's would take the lead back at 12-11, but would take the lead with a 4-0 run behind the serving of sophomore Keilahna Castillo (Grandville, Mich./Grandville). The Knights closed the set on an 8-1 run and took the set 25-15. Freshman Sarah DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich./Northpointe Christian) had four kills in the set.
The Knights jumped on Saint Mary's early in the third set and would not look back. Calvin took an 8-3 lead behind the serve of junior Emily Blankespoor (Grand Rapids, Mich./South Christian) and Laura Danhoff. Calvin closed the set on a 10-2 run and won, 25-10.
Laura Danhoff had a game-high 12 kills and hit. 550 on the night, she also had three aces. Anna Kamp had 10 kills and junior Jenna Lodewyk (Villa Park, Ill./Timothy Christian) had 32 assists. Sarah DeVries tied her career-high in blocks at five and solo blocks with two. Emily Blankespoor had a team-high 12 digs and three aces. The Knights hit .273 on the night and held Saint Mary's to a -.011 hitting percentage.
The Knights return to action on Friday for the two-day Midwest Invitational. Calvin will host Clarkson and Elmhurst on Friday and Wheaton and Ohio Wesleyan on Saturday.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
Albion 3, Calvin 0

ALBION, Mich. - A quick flip of the switch allowed Albion to gain the momentum and claim a 3-0 victory over Calvin Wednesday night at Albion's Davis Athletic Complex.

Calvin (6-7-1 overall, 5-4-1 MIAA) outshot Albion 6-1 through the first 35 minutes but the Britons were able to score on a swift counterattack in the 38th minute as Riley Burnette converted a feed from Emily Woford. Just four minutes later, Burnette set up Haley Kennedy for a goal, allowing the Britons (5-6-2 overall, 4-6-1 MIAA) to take a 2-0 halftime lead.

Albion controlled the run of play from that point forward, outshooting the Knights 6-2 in the second half. The Britons scored an insurance goal by Burnette in the 85th minute.

Albion outshot Calvin 9-8.

Sophomore Brianna Koehn (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS) had five saves in goal for the Knights.

Calvin is back in action on Saturday when it hosts league-leading Kalamazoo at noon at Zuidema Field.
