Fueled by the offensive efforts of freshman Ian Adams and senior Isky Van Doorne, the Calvin men's soccer team got back to its winning ways on Tuesday afternoon, defeating rival Hope College 5-1 at Zuidema Field.
This contest marked the second matchup of the year, the 102nd of all-time, between the two teams. On September 17, Calvin captured the first rivalry meeting, defeating Hope 3-0 on the road. Calvin has now won seven straight games against Hope dating back to 2014. The Knights are 10-1-1 in their last 12 games against the Flying Dutchmen. Calvin leads the all-time series against Hope 57-34-11.
The Knights' victory boosted their season record 10-2-0 record, 7-1-0 in the MIAA, as they bounced back from a tough 1-0 loss to Adrian that snapped their 41-game MIAA regular season win streak. The Dutchmen fall to 3-11-0 with a 1-8-0 conference mark. Calvin remains six points clear of second place Adrian and Albion in the MIAA league standings.
Ranked 25th nationally, Calvin built its momentum early with numerous scoring chances that eventually generated first half goals by Van Doorne and Adams.
In the 25th minute, senior Stephan Hooker had a promising scoring opportunity, but his shot trickled just wide of the net. Just over a minute later, Van Doorne took a pass in the box from junior Micah Beard and sent the ball to the upper-left side of the net, beating Hope goalkeeper Blair McCormick.
With just over a minute remaining before halftime, Adams gave Calvin a two-goal advantage, scoring off a corner kick served in by junior Matt Hinds.
At the half, the Knights held a 9-1 shots advantage over their visitors.
In the second half, the Dutchmen were unable to put a shot on goal until senior Alex Lindsey had a free kick chance, awarded after Calvin senior Jay Noyola received a yellow card. Lindsey capitalized on the free kick, scoring on a bending shot that sailed past Calvin goalkeeper Nate Van Ryn into the top-left corner of the goal, bringing the score to 2-1 in the 66th minute.
However, the Knights answered with a trio of goals to take the Dutchmen out of the game.
The Knights reclaimed their two-goal advantage when Adams scored his second goal of the afternoon off a pass into the box by senior David Waterson.
Van Doorne followed suit, putting in his second goal of the contest, extending Calvin's lead to three; Adams earned the assist on the scoring play. To cap off the scoring burst, it was Adams once again, completing his hat trick by scoring off a long pass from downfield sent by Waterson.
Calvin outshot its visitors 20-3 in the victory. Goalkeeper Van Ryn recorded one save on the afternoon for Calvin. McCormick had three saves in one half of action for Hope while Stephen Wilbur had one save for Hope in the second half.
Calvin head coach Ryan Souders was pleased with his team's resolve after Hope sliced the deficit in half on the free kick by Lindsey in the second half. "I think two things come into play. In a rivalry game anything can happen. Secondly Hope is a much better team than its record shows. Alex (Lindsey) had an unbelievable free kick strike. To the credit of our guys, they showed great resolve after Hope scored. We didn't lose our heads, stayed composed, played with energy, created chances and we were able to finish those chances which was really nice."
The Knights are back in action on Saturday when they will travel to Kalamazoo to take on the Hornets for the second time this season. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
